Not too sure where to post this, so I figured this would be the right place. Does anybody sharpen hooks? If a hook on your jig, spinnerbait, or buzzbait gets dull, what do you do? If you do sharpen them, how would you go about doing this?

Yes. Every time I grab a lure I check the hooks real quick. If they are not sharp I sharpen them real quick. I use a small hook sharpening stone, its small enough to keep in my pocket. It usually takes 3 passes on one side of the hook, 3 on the other, and then 1 down the top to take a rusty dull hook to needle sharp.

Sharpen your hooks so they bite into you thumb nail.

i always sharpen my hooks after a few fish. i too use a small hook sharpening stone. i believe i purchased it at a Menards or Lowes. they are very cheap.

I don't know where you can get them honestly. I've had it since I was 4 or 5 when my father gave it to me.

 

I'm sure berkley or mustad or even BPS brand would have them. Probably by the fillet knives, stringers, scales, and stuff like that.

I do not use the V, I just use the flat part of the stone withe smaller hooks. With big hooks like spinnerbait hooks I will run them down the V.

I saw this in my sister's room so I stole it to sharpen my hooks and it works really well. It costs like a dollar as well. A 4 sided nail filer and buffer. I use side 2 very lightly to side 3 then finish with the last side. It won't damage your hooks.

I sharpen hooks with a Eze-Lap diamond sharpener, which works better/faster than any other I've tried.  The problem you run into is that any hook point you sharpen gets its protective anti-corrosion coating removed and will quickly rust.  Nowadays, I mostly avoid it by using high quality hooks like Gamakatsu, which have very good metal temper that keeps them sharp longer without re-pointing.  I routinely change factory hooks out for Gamakatsu or Owner.  I put the factory hooks on crankbaits that I give away to friends!  They aren't bad hooks but I rather they were someone else's problem.

i use the sidewalk..and also good quality owner hooks that dont get dull so easily but when they do a couple of swipes on the sidewalk and they are very sharp again
