What is a good kayak for fishing. I'm not looking to spend a whole lot because I'm planning to get a new truck here soon so what would you all recommend?

A sit on top kayak is the best for fishing. What is your budget?

My budget is around 500-600 bucks somewhere in that area

Hobie... but the pro angler is 3,000+

 

If you can afford to buy a $3,000 kayak all up front (most stores won't do financing) you can probably afford to finance a cheap bass boat.

 

From what I understand, getting an expensive kayak is best if you are taking it on lakes/rivers/ocean and saving tons of money by not hauling a big boat around.

Except the fact that they cost as much as a car !!

NuCanoe, but they run around $1200 for the new frontier. You could find a used one or get the older model for around $600.

You're not going to get a good kayak with your budget, unless you look used.   

 

Personally I think the best kayak for fishing is a canoe. I fished from a kayak many times and I don't care for it. You're stuck in pretty much one position and have to constantly maneuver the boat to point to where you want to cast.

That's a rebadged older style Tarpon 120.  Probably about the best yak you can buy for the price.  

It all depends on what kind of kayak, how tricked out you want it, your size. I have a Old Town Predator 10'6" sit in yak. It came with one rod holder, and I put an extra one on, it was designed to be a duck hunting kayak and has a larger opening. Also I made a bracket for my fishing buddy. You can get a regular Old Town for $300-$350 and then ad accessories to it, some which you might have to make yourself. Or you can get a kayak with aft and bow storage, and bungees.

If you save up a little more, you can get into a decent sit on top, which are way more comfortable, and easier to get in and out of. I've fished from cheap little kayaks, and mine which I've set up to suit me. The key is: Does it float? Is it cheaper than a boat? Can I find one that I'm comfortable in? I recommend to sit in them, and try getting in and out. Check out sit on tops, and make sure if yours doesn't come with a padded seat to pick up a gel seat.

I have the Pescador 12 and love it. It is fast, glides nice, very stable, and you can not beat the price for a rebadged Tarpon.

I got mine last fall off of Amazon for $420 shipped to my door. The prices start to drop in September if you don't mind waiting.

 

A few of my friends have Pro Anglers and I keep up with them no problem but they can not keep up with me on the flats. They need a foot of water, I only need 4 inches.

check out Bass Pro Shop.  Look at the Ascend line of kayaks.  You can find the Ascend FS12T (sit on top) for $499.  i got a FS10 sit in kayak and i really like it.  Very well made and thought out for fishing.  Honestly if i could do it again i would have probably got the FS12T sit on top, but at the time i wanted the smaller kayak to fit on top of my car.  Afterward i realized i could have done the 12 footer, but may have been a little tougher to load considering it's heavier.  I'd also check craigslist as you can find some pretty good deals on there.  Good luck!
