Never used a jig before

Featured Replies

Hey guys. I have never really fished a jig and know very little about the different kinds of jig styles. The spots I fish are very pressured and I never see anyone throwing one...I see crawfish in the water so I want to try it out. I was wondering if someone can recommend me plain jane jig setup so I can try it out. (color/jighead/weight). The small canal I fish has a rocky bottom along with some rocky sides in some areas kinda like chunked up concrete. I wouldn't even know where to start...football...finessee...swim. No clue lol. Any help would be cool!

buy some bitsy bug 1/4oz jigs in green craw color. add a baby rage craw of similar color.

let the jig sink on semi-slack line. wait 10 secs. crawl it a few inches. pause. give it a little hop. pause.

repeat and do different combos. crawl it around the rocks and logs below. work it slow. if you think you might be fishing it too fast, you are.

Read all you clan about jig fishing.

You will learn that a football head jig is what you use in rocks.

Jigs come in all weights and colors so you can drive yourself nuts trying to buy one.

Take the advice above and take only jigs with you on your next outing.

Fish them like you do a plastic worm on the bottom.

Crawl them like a crawfish or injured baitfish, too.

Use a trailer.

Read how to adjust the brush guard and experiment.

Purchase either the book or DVD of Jig Secrets to Hugh Catches by Denny Brauer and read and watch what Denny says.

I got my copy at BPS and have read the book and watched the video. Check it out on Google to see if you can find it.

As a bass fisherman you have a very wide arsenal and you need to learn how to fish each weapons platform, but one at a time and slowly.  :P

Let the jig fall on a slack line, but pay attention as the bait sinks. A lot of bites happen during this time.

This is the spot I do alot of fishing right now. I am standing on a spillway where its pretty fast moving with overhanging trees. You can see where the real chunky rock ends and it turns into more of a mix of rock and dirt banks. This small area is the rockiest on the bottom with pretty stained water. Not sure if this would change anything.

I love jigs. They have caught me more big fish than any other lure. I personally like 3/8 oz brown/green pumpkin or black/blue jigs with tiny or baby paca craws or chigger craws as trailers. All of my 5 lb+ bass this year have been caught on jigs.

a black and blue jig is staple for my jig fishing put a green trailer on and it mimics a blue gill
