Punching ???

Featured Replies

I will be going to a small lake here in Ontario that is perfectly suited for this technique...but I have a few questions.

1. what is the best hook to use for a tungsten punching rig?

2. if I choose a Texas hook, with a jerk shad for the back of the rig, does size matter?  (I generally use HAVOC "the jerk" 's)

Thanks for reading!!

I've started taking a 60 deg bend Owner jig hook and putting a coil on it like my weighted hooks and punching like that.  It works a lot better then the standard old worm hooks IMO.

Hard to beat a 4/0 Trokar straight shank flipping hook for punching IMO

Trokar flipping hooks are good and so are the VMC flipping hooks. You'll probably want to get 3/o to 5/o depending on the size bait you're punching.

I'm liking the Mustad Ultra Point over the Trokar. It's stronger, the point is longer so it holds fish better, the keeper doesn't destroy my baits as badly and it's a little bigger.

As far as size I almost never use anything smaller than a 5/0 unless the bait is really small. The straight shank hooks don't have as big a bite as a standard EWG so you need a bigger hook.

Ive become a big trokar fan. The only downside to the trokar is that it is so sharp it tears up a lot of baits. As far as hook size I go with the smallest size I can still having enough gap.

Yea I agree. It does seem to be a bit rough on the baits, which is why I sometimes prefer a rounded hook over the trokar. Trokars are really sharp though, no questions there.
