Crankbait Tuning Questions

Featured Replies

I have been having a lot of my bomber model A's and excalibur fat free shads starting to run off to one side after just a couple fish.

So I have a couple questions:

1. When I'm tuning them, if it's running to my left do I turn the eyelet to the right, or since that's the crankbaits right, do I turn it to the left?

2. Are there some cranks that you just can't get to run straight once they start doing it, no matter what? Hate to have to replace crankbaits after a couple fish, especially ones that catch bass as well as model A's and fat frees.

Tune them the opposite way they are running. There will be some that you can't tune but that shouldn't stop you from using them , have you ever seen a baitfish run in a straight line 100 % of the time.

I bought a strike king crank bait that I can absolutely not get to run good at all......That thing has had more tune ups than my truck!!    There must be something wrong internally.....

If it has a rattle, the rattle may be stuck in the chamber because of excess glue, debris, whatever. Bang it on a hard surface to knock it loose.

I don't turn the line tie, I bend it. If you turn it, it can go right back where it was. Sometimes you can clamp needle nose pliers onto the line tie and actually see which way and how much you should bend it. Also check the hook hangers, they can get bent and cause problems and are often overlooked.

what i do is i make several long casts and see where it's going. then you pick it up, look at it's FACE, and bend the eyelet thingy the opposite way in which it's going. it may take some time to do, but there's nothing like a perfectly tuned crankbait!

One time at Bass Pro, I came across a crankbait tuning tool.  It works better than needle nose pliers.

Before you actually start bending the loop, make sure that the split in the split ring hasn't shifted after a few fish and hanging up at the loop. That could hinder the action.

I change to oval split rings or use a snap to avoid this.  If that isn't the issue go slow, don't bend too much or you could ruin the bait completely.

It certainly does. I just posted a link to it yesterday in another thread.

Thanks guys, I plan to buy the tool.

Those are a great tool its one of them must have items if you ask me.

The Brat and Blue streak pretty much summed it up. I have 2 Little N's that run to the side. (one left, one right) Good for docks and sea-walls...
