Striper Fishing Off The Coast Of Maryland

Featured Replies

We are planning a trip to head out this fall for stripers.  I havent done any striper fishing in years and need alittle help.  The biggest rod I own is a St Croix Mojo Bass Rod which I believe is a medium or a medium/heavy fast. 7'.  I have to update later about the real I have sorry not at the house right now.  Is this rod sufficient for striper fishing?  Also, I believe its rated up to 14lb test.......does anyone have any advice on which line to use as well assuming this rod is ok.

Thanks!

Use what you have, but I probably would recommend something else.  Haven't said whether the rod is spinning or casting, or if boat or shore fishing, bait, lures or trolling.  IMO a med rod is totally out, mh is fine but I'd be using one with a max lure weight 1.5-2 oz rated at 20 or 25# line.  Fishing up at Montauk from shore I saw most using 8-12' mh-hvy rods, 2-4 oz lures and they love Van Staals.  My charter Capt buddy in Cape May, N.J. (Capt Norm Brook, Darlynmarlyn charters), 7' mh and heavy rods and Penn spinners, 4500-6500.

I'd have to be targeting some pretty small stripers to be comfortable with fishing a 7' M rod for them, casting or spinning. Even then if you stumble into a big fish the fight will be short lived.

youre gonna need a whole nother set-up. if i were you i would wait until december and hit up the chesapeake bay, thats when the trophies come in there at 40-50+ inches. i caught a 42 incher on mothers day this year trolling big umbrella rigs with swimbaits, around the time of mothers day is also trophy season. the limit was one striper greater than 28 inches. not sure exactly where youre going though, my trip was out of deale, maryland
