So I was fishing a lizard through some pretty thick lily pads today, wiggling it across the tops and letting it drop into holes, when something... the best I can describe is that something blew the lid off the pad my bait had just been on a split second before.  There was a pop like a champagne cork that accompanied it, and no other real movement or commotion in the area.  The pad suddenly had a big hole in the center of it but with the center piece still barely attached, like the lid of an empty soup can sticking up.  It was about thirty feet away so I couldn't really get a picture of it, but it's one of the weirdest things I've ever heard or seen on the water, like a bluegill popping if it were some mythical 20 lb. 'gill. Of course, I continued casting at the spot, but nothing came of it. 

 

Did something try to inhale my bait through the pad and pop a hole in it with the suction? Any ideas?

We had a meteor one day crash into the water about 30' in front of us. It was a big Ker plunk.

I wonder if it was a smaller one with you?

I thought of toothy critters too, but there was no other movement, nothing burst through the surface, the pad didn't move one bit up, down, sideways... I feel like a pike or muskie would have made much more of a ruckus. Seems to me that ANY sort of topwater strike from any sizable fish would have made some kind of boil in the area, but this hole just seemed to appear in an instant without the slightest extra ripple.  Is the bait monkey amphibious?

A fisherman story.  The truth! I've seen Ogopogo, Bigfoot, Mothman, Jersey Devil, etc... you name it.  I'm telling you, they are all real and the government is just mucking up these stories.  

Probably a big lady bass or bluegill or crappie missed the bait and swam away. I could have also been a catfish.

 

I have seen bass actually jump out of the water in lily pads and miss my bait. Talk about a dumb fish. And she was a nice one, at least three-pounds.

 

The lily pad got turned on its side and stood up.

 

Nothing you can do until they decide to strike again.

 

This is part of the beauty of fishing. You never know what will hit your bait and if they miss it what they were. This activity is the basis of our lies to each other about the one we missed.

 

So now you can brag that you missed at least a six-pounder and you should have seen that big splash and how the lily pads got all messed up and it ate half of my lizard and broke my rod tip and I fell out of the boat setting the hook but she got away. Sounds good to me!

Yea a frog would have got the attention of whatever cause that hole. I would saw it was a fish and the Lilly pad may have had some rips in is so that's how the hole and noise was create maybe.

Happens on the Lake I have a cabin on in Northern Michigan all the time. Never really a fish where the pops happen. I don't know what it is but I'm pretty sure it isn't fish. Maybe a turtle

xx-large turtle,  biggest one we have caught was over 35lbs.   They come up from underneath almost completly silent, alligator snappers are common up hear in New Hampshire well into 20lbs, whatever was in its mouth is simply crushed in 1/2
