Advice On Prop For A 2013 Tracker 175Txw

Featured Replies

Thinking about upgrading to a stainless steel prop to boost my top speed, my main concern is top speed only. No idea what pitch, type etc i would need any tips or info would be appreciated.

75HP Mercury OptiMax

Like what Martin said, it may boost MPH by about 1-3 MPH.  Just go on Merc website and go to the prop selector section.  You just in put in which motor you have, what your WOT RPM's are, what type of boat you have, what you're looking for (overal performance, top speed, etc.) and it'll recommend 3-4 propellors along with the size and pitch to use.  I have a tracker as well and plan to do this, so I was messing around on their page.

I do have a tracker 175txw with the 75hp as well.

What rpms are you running and what speed gps?

I may have a couple suggestions.

I havnt done GPS MPH seems like off hand RPM is about 5500ish and Speedometer i have hit 44, which im sure based on all i have heard is not accurate, probably more like 38 - 40mph.

If i could get 3-5 more MPH i'd be interested in a new prop, am i dreaming to big?

Consider this. When you hit something with an aluminum prop, the aluminum breaks. Aluminum props are kind of like a fuse. When you hit something with a stainless prop......what breaks?

Trapper, on my G3 175 with a 60 yammy  im GPSing 36 fully loaded, alone and with a half tank of fuel. Add a person that drops to 35. Ive had tracker 175's with a 60 pull 1 or 2 mph lower than that because of the different steeper v hull design. Since you have a 75 you should be getting somewhere in the upper 30's but most likely not 43-44. My speedo tells me I do around 41-42 for reference (not that ANY of them are correct)

Stinger 170 with a 50 hp Merc Ive topped at 31mph GPS @ 5300RPM fully loaded, full tank, 2 people. Stock 12p tin prop.

I will double check what I have- was at 39.8 at 5200rps gps and 44 speedometer with stock prop, put stainless on and got 2 mph better but pulled higher rpms. Put the stock back on for a vacation I went on and kind of forgot to put the ss back on.  I will let you know the dimensions when I get home to double check.

Before you do anything, you'll need some baseline numbers.  Here's a couple of links that should get you educated:

Trapper, I changed out to a stainless steel prop as the guys in my bass club all have staninless steel props and I wanted one too.

No great increase in speed has been enjoyed.

But I look good going down the highway to the cars behind me!!!

Stainless is suppose to help on the hole shot. Tin blades will flex.

Just changing out to a stainless isn't going to change much.  Going from a 3 blade to a 4 blade will help hole shot.  Going down one pitch will also help hole shot.  Going up one pitch will help top speed.  These are just generalizations, there's more to it than that.  Take a look at the links I posted above, and you'll get an idea.  Plug in the numbers, and see what you get.  Too much slip, go up a pitch. Not getting top end rpms, go down a pitch.  I tested a few props, and I found that while going up one pitch resolved hitting the rev limiter, my hole shot went from like 3.5 seconds to what seemed forever.  I just couldn't get up on plane without cavitation (spinning out in car terms).  There's other aspects to prop design, but in this case, we're not looking at high performance, just squeezing out a few extra mph.  In my opinion, this may be a matter of redistributing weight, and balancing the boat, along with a prop change.  It's not an exact science, and every boat is different.  Read up, and post some slip numbers, and maybe someone can help you further.  Otherwise, it's just hunt and peck at the issue.

thought I needed to get something else all together as I really did not get much difference.  Seems like this is the popular choice so I am not getting anything new.  Almost forgot I had it actually as the alum. performed almost as well.
