I Hate My Mg

For the fourth time in the last two years my 36v Motor Guide has let me down in a tournament.  The first 3 times it went to the MG authorized repair shop...this time it's headed to the dumpster.

Hello MK Fortrex.

I should have done this $700 worth of repairs ago.

I just got a boat with a MG on it and I will give it a fair shake.....but I know I will wind up with the MK

Now that I have a Minn Kota, I don't think I will ever go back to a MG. To be fair, I had a 12v 46lb MG compared to my 24v 70lb MK, but still I have been "around" similar MG's, and I just like MK better.

I've had both, and still do.

On a trip to our daughter's home in GA, the speed control on my Minnkota burned out.  Fortunately I was able to find a dealer with the part an hour from her home.  It was still under warranty, and the dealer was kind enough to replace it immediately.  Only took a few minutes.

Last year on the Road Trip, I had a steering cable failure on my Motorguide.  With a major assist from Alpster we were able to effect a temporary fix that lasted for the remainder of the week.  The steering cable is crimped into the steering rack, and had pulled out.  We were able to recrimp it by carefully using the cutting portion of the jaws on a pair of vice grips.

Never had a MG. No reason to change.

I prefer MG- one failed however I bent the shaft, my fault.

Have used MK...hated the foot pedal.

Ive had one issue with minnkota the mom button had issues. The button would stick and i couldnt get it to turn back off after i hit the button. Of course it happened right before i was gonna leave on vacation. called mk and they had me a new part the next day.

I have had a Fortrex for a few years now that has worked as advertised. My experience with MG over the years has not been great. I do fish a lot with a friend with a 36V MG that works OK. The adjustments are not as simple and the foot control on/off is is backwards (for me). I'll stick with MK.

I currently have a MG on my Ranger. The MG is a 2000. I have only had the boat a year but the MG was working just fine. Then the other day I got to the lake and my speed control knob was gone. Not in the boat, nowhere to be found. Couldn't understand how it just vanished. I have a MG on my 2002 Tracker and I had to do a few things to keep it working. I really want to go MK with my next motor, im just unsure about the foot pedal. I have used MGs since i was 7 (im 30 now) and not sure i would be able to get used to the different pedal.

Too bad they can't be standard so you could switch pedals. I guess that would be like Chevy and Ford having interchangeable parts.

I just ordered the 36v 101 Fortrex from TW.  It should be here by Friday.
