My birthday is next month so I treated myself a little early! Going to be my first time fishing a swim bait larger than 6". Hoping for some nice bass pics to post up in the coming weeks  :)

No hurry but I'd probably add some 8" Hudds and a couple MS Slammers to that list :) What reel you planning on throwing them on? Welcome to the addictive world of big baits  :eyebrows:

I have a calcutta CT201B, I needed the left hand retrieve! Using 50lb braid. You guys think I should use a mono leader? The water in the lakes I fish is very clear.

straight mono. P-Line OG (PF) or CXX, 25 or 30lb. You'll cast off baits on braid, especially 50lb. If you do use braid, use 65 or 80lb straight to the bait for topwater swimbaits or with a 25lb fluoro leader for sinking baits like hudds. Tie a crazy alberto knot to join the leader to the braid.

Holy Happy Birthday list! I need to drop $500 on myself for my birthday in December.

250 For Bday. 250 for Christmas. This way you don't need to feel like your spoiling yourself like me....lol

Dude, that's a sweet birthday order right there. Nice job!

Be careful with the bbz on that mojo rod...those are a tad heavy on that rod

I am not familiar with the St Croix rod listed, looked at their 7'9' Mojo swimbait rod and it's rated up to 4 oz lures and doesn't have a foregrip!

Having fished big heavy swimbaits for several years, this rod is questionable. Okuma 7'11" heavy swimbait rod is in the same price range and works for 8" BB1's and TripleTrout wooden swimmers. Your rod maybe OK for 7" TT's and 68 Huds. In regards to line; Big Game 25# works, good knot strength and smooth casting.

Good luck with your swim baiting.

I throw the 8" triple trout on a MH rod rated to 1 3/8 oz. Its a 2.75oz bait. I think he will be fine.

I hope I'll be fine. Trying to return the rod at this point would hit me with a 15% restocking fee and the shipping back to Cali :( If it causes me issues in the future I'll pick up the Okuma, saved it to my favorites.

Many rods are over/underrated with what they will throw. With that being said, this rod is pretty much spot on with its rating. Tossing a 5+ oz bait like the bbz will get hairy...I wouldn't risk it. If you are going to risk it, make sure you lob cast the bait and don't try to hum it out there.. less risk

The BBZ I bought is 4.4oz, to technically I'm only over .4oz. Hopefully the rod is under rated!

Don't put a ton of stock into the manufacturers ratings for rods. Much like megapixels on cameras, each company is in charge of their own ratings.

I had a rod previously that was rated up to 10oz but if you put anything over 5 on it, the rod was completely ineffective for throwing a bait.

St Croix is notorious for over-estimating ratings on their big bait rods.

I found that the 8" BBz did not throw well whatsoever on my Okuma 7'11" H big bait rod. With that being said, it most likely won't throw well on yours. I'm not tryin to out you down or anything.

Meh, Ill give it a go with the rod I have. If it doesn't cast well then I'll just put the lure away till I decide to invest in a more expensive big bait rod. Thanks for all the tips guys.

My swimbait rod is only rated to 3 ounces and I fish a ROF5 8" Hudd on it that's 4.2ozs without any problem. I just make sure not to do any fast, snap cast so the rod can load slowly and evenly and lob cast it.

Worst case, it doesn't work and you have to buy another combo  :eyebrows:
