Thats what people have been doing since the dawn of cranking, since the day cranks and mono were released everyone using them and manufacturing them have gained alot of knowledge. We now have fluorocarbon which replaces mono for cranking, the lures run deeper, there is slack line sensitivity and it is said to be less visable than mono. To make up for less stretch many cranking sticks now are graphite with moderate action, this setup paired with fluorocarbon is widely believed to be the best setup for cranks in modern times.

Like so much of this sport, it comes down to personal preference.

 

I use glass cranking rods and 10 - 20 lb. Braid.

The stretch in mono does not make up for the flex and recovery of a mod or mod/fast action rod. I like a mod/fast for ripping across the tops of weeds and a mod glass rod for deep cranking.

One thing you have to realize is a rods deflection will remain constant whereas the length of your line with determine how much stretch will occur. the longer the length, the longer the dispersing for the stretch. The rod is meant for the specific action it's going to receive.
