Split Rings Size And Brand Recommendations

Featured Replies

  • Super User

I'm putting together an order and am needing some split rings. I haven't a clue on what size to get and am also looking for brand recommendations. I will be using most for cranks and some to add weight on susending jerkbaits. 1/2-3/4 oz lipless and nothing larger than a 5XD crank.

Thanks in advance

Owner Hyper Wire Split Rings are definitely the way to go for quality split rings.  Barlow's sales some heavy duty stainless steel split rings that would be great for adding weight to jerkbaits.

My suggestion is also Owner Hyper Wire rings. I'd go with either #3 or #4 for the lures you mentioned.

I buy 65# heavy duty split rings for making my barracuda tubes, they weight 5 grains which is not very much compared to a 3/4 oz lure and a lot heavier than I would need for bass fishing.  Don't think the weight of a smaller split ring is going to make much difference.  I save my split rings from my bass lures before I toss them out.

I won't recommend a brand but I'll give you a size, #2 should work, and I agree with Alberto-1, oval rings are the way to go for line tie, I swear every time I have to tie the knot manages to find the opening in the ring, it is worse when it is cold.

I couldn't help you in size but when I went out looking for rings I ending up buying the big bags at cabelas in numerous sizes that way I'm set for anything, it was worth it since I ran into a big collection of cranks/jerks a little later down the road. I never ran into a problem with the house brand rings not have I ever heard anyone complain about any bad rings on a structural standpoint.

This is another vote for the Owner Hyper Wire Split rings.

I prefer to change out rings & hooks on most baits and these are the split rings of choice; Smaller in size but Extremely strong and they have yet to "open up".  One of the best attributes of this ring is that it will continue to retain it's original shape even after repeated treble hook changes, which is something many brands can not boast.

They cost a little more but you'll save in the long run.

For the application you're listed, sizes 2 & 3 should do you nicely.

You're welcome.

Let me know what you think.  If you're into quality products, you're done looking for split rings.

Good deal. When I started using higher quality hard baits I noticed how well the spilt rings were.

Thank you! I looked everywhere for a clevis size chart today and didn't find one. They had it.

Cool.

Yeah, that website is truly like the encyclopedia for terminal tackle.

Has your opinion changed in the last 4 years?

No - It's been reinforced.

Owner Hyper Wire rings are all I use and I've also been replacing the front ring / line ties on many baits with Owner Oval Split Ring  and Owner Tear Drop Split Ring.

Both eliminate all concern regarding the line getting into the split ring 'split'.
