What To Do With This Rod

Featured Replies

I have a 6'3" heavy muskie rod that I have not used in years (Gander Guide Series).  Bought it to simply toss spoons in Canada for northern and did have success with it but just hasn't been used.  Is there anything anyone can suggest that I use it for?  It will need a reel but don't want anything expensive for it if it's gonna sit around.

Is the rod designed for a spinning or a baitcasting reel? My first thoughts are large, heavy swimbaits or umbrella rigs--- but those are two techniques that I don't know much about because I am just not outfitted for them. Maybe you could also use it for fishing heavy cover and lily pads. You have heavy power, but I am not sure what action your rod tip has. It could also be useful for live bait rigs or catfishing. What about stripers? Do you have any of those behemouths cruising around your local lake?

If its musky specific its going to be too stiff for most bass applications. You can probably throw some big jerkbaits or bucktails with it but its probably best left for a ski/pike set up. 6' to 6'6 musky rods were a staple a decade ago but thar has all changed with guys using 8 to 9 foot xxh rods now.

A heavy rod is not needed to land heavy fish, but at times it's a big help to pull fish thru cover and/or to handle heavier lures.  Not knowing the waters or any other specifics I might use a rod like that for trolling or bait fishing.  It probably will not load up too well to be effective casting lures.
