Rabbit fur jigs

Featured Replies

I'm talking about a regular bass jig with the weedguard but instead of a silicon skirt it has a rabbit fur skirt. Would this be a good option in cold water like the regular deer hair jigs?

I've got a few rabbit fur jigs.  I don't remember where I got them, it seems to me that it is a company out of Colorado, but I don't remember for sure.  I've only fished them a couple of times and then for a short period of time and I didn't get bit.  They looked OK in the water, though.

If you are talking about a Stanley Ribbit they are excellant Texas rigged as well.

Cold water.

Smallmouths.  :)

I tie a bucktail jig that has a rabbit-fur strip as the trailer instead of pork or plastic.

For cold water Bass, it's deadly.

I haven't seen one only made of rabbit fur, but it wouldn't be much different than the rabbit fur strip leeches lots of fly guys really love.

Google "Bunny Leech".

I used this one last spring/early summer and had success with it on LMB:

I didn't like the rabbit fur skirt, so I opted for the silicone skirt. I'm thinking of making a shirt with flashabou and krystal flash in lieu of the silicone on some new jigs I'll be building. My thinking is, the flashabou and krystal flash will have more and better color possibilities.

The one above uses a chenille body as well as the rabbit fur and silicone skirt.

After reading this thread, I'm going to tie it on again this fall. :)

Look up the post hair jigs in the smallmouth bass fishing forums about 3/4 down the page.

If you do a search for Paul Jensen or Jensen Jigs, he makes the kind your talking about. Nice stuff too. His regular rabbit hair jigs work great in spring also.

This is the video I found on jensenjigs.com and as you can see these jigs have a weedguard unlike the smallmouth hair jigs found on the website which are just on a ball jig head.  Does anyone know if these are effective and where I can find them. Thanks  :)

Jensenjigs.com

E mail or call, the info is on the website.

He makes really nice stuff, I've used his hair jigs for years.

From his home page:

Jensen Jigs is moving. Effective Monday September 27th I will no longer be accepting orders. I will reopen after the new year. Please do not order. If you want to talk, you can call me @(920-722-0799) or email me: Click Here to email Paul. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Anyone order from him lately?  Is he really closed for business until the new year?

I just got some jigs from him last week. We were talking by email about some new colors for smallies.  Give him a call or email about any concerns.

I'm thinking I'll just have to make a few myself and don't worry I won't hijack your ideas  :)

The key to rabbit fur, and really any hair jig is slowing down, your usually fishing in cold water and a slow presentation is key. I usually fish them slow enough that an average cast might take up to ten minutes if I think I am in an area where there is fish and nothing has fouled the jig.

I tried a couple of Jensen jigs awhile back (like 5 or so years) and caught some fish on them but felt the rabbit fur has so much action it kinda turned unproductive in water under 50 degrees. I also tied some with rabbit trailers and bucktail at the same time and did better with them in cold water, but haven't really fished them again until last winter when i was going through all my jig boxes and discovered a bunch of untouched ones that were still perfect, I haven't fished at all this fall, but last fall and into the winter I used them as a one two punch with a hairy craw and both were quite successful, I would stop getting bit with one, and throw the other and almost always pick up more fish. So I would say don't limit yourself to just one style of hair jig, they all have there days!

Hijack away. I posted the pic and idea to help you. PM me if you need help. :D

BTW...Great vid you posted

May I recommend sticking to cotton or cotton blend?  Unless of course you are holding some sort of country-disco concert, in which case the flashabou might work as fringe lining your  sleeves and shoulder reinforcements.  :)

Seriously though, your jig looked well done.  I use bucktail in the cold for smallies, but haven't tried the rabbit.  Maybe I should give it a whirl.

ROFL

Just showing my age. My daughter picked out the materials. She says my hairy legs "accentuates" the outfit...LOL

Seriously though, thanks for the compliment. I'll have to give the bucktail a try. Thanks for the tip.
