So let's hear it! I want to know what gear ratios of baitcasters you guys use for different types of baits. It can be anything from the standard to the totally out there beliefs! If you want to list rods too thats perfectly acceptable! Just really curious to see what everyone does.

shallow cranks and rattletraps 6.4-1 6'6 M rod, deep cranks 5.4-1 6' 10ft MH, spinner baits, chatterbaits 7.0-1 7' MH, A-rig/frogs 6.4-1 7' H

7.1:1, 7' MH/F for Jigs, Frogs

7.1:1, 7' M/F for T-Rigs

6.4:1, 6'6" M/M for Shallow to Med Depth Cranks

7.1:1 for bottom baits such as T-rigs, Jigs, C-rigs, Wacky Worms, flippin' and pitching, frogs, topwater, jerkbaits

6.3:1 for lipless cranks, spinnerbaits, shallow to mid depth crankbaits, A-rigs, chatterbaits

5.1:1 for deep crankbaits, swimbaits, and buzzbaits.

7.0:1- 7.3:1  for frogs, jigs, t-rigs, carolina rigs, football head jigs, jerkbaits, punching/flipping

6.2:1 - 6.8:1 - Squarebills, Medium Diving Cranks, Topwater, Rattletraps, Flukes, weightless plastics

4.9:1 - 5.8:1 - Deep cranks,  swimbaits (If I knew how to use them lol).

 

 

Keep in mind these are general and fluid.  I can and do switch it up.  I also have several rods and reels that overlap that are in the 6.4:1 range to allow for versatility and the ability to do other techniques.  I'm always experimenting and trying other stuff to see where I can improve. 

I've gotten away from higher gear reels for jigs and gone back to around 26 IPT for pitching and swimming jigs. Helps me slow down some.

Since different gears on different brands differ, I pay more attention to IPT.

Your question might have provided better information if you had asked about I.P.T. rather than gear ratio. There is quite a bit of difference between one mfg and another in terms of IPT even when comparing reels of the same gear ratio. Spinning and casting reels cannot be compared apples to apples in terms of gear ratio also, as a spinning reel with the same gear ratio of a casting reels will almost always move considerably more line.

If you are just looking for a standard guideline the information that has been provided is very typical of most anglers.

Which is also a good argument for having reels in the same brand or line. I have zillions in several gear rations because in know their ipt is standardized. Therefore I can be alittle more precise

7.3:1 for frogs, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, jigs

6.4:1 med cranks, square cranks, lipless

5.4:1 All cranks

6.2:1 on all spinning reel for plasctics

7:1 on jig

7:1 on worm

7:1 on crank

7:1 on spinnarbait

7:1 on top water

7:1 on blablabal

6.3:1 on frog

 

My idea is to keep them all about the same. Then I the operator of the reel can adjust the speed manually. This way I do not have to remember, "I'm using such and such reel, therefore I need to turn the handle slower/faster" etc. Also I can switch around the reels vs rods and they all work. Keep it simple silly method.

 

Note: on 6:3:1 reel was freebie, so I had no choice in gear ratio.
