Yellow Perch Skirt - Any Suggestions

Featured Replies

I am trying to find a good combination of skirt tabs which I can use to imitate a Yellow Perch.  Was wondering if any of you have any suggestions.

I generally buy my skirts from fishingskirts.com but I am not opposed to try elsewhere.

Thanks

My choice would be tab of yellow (not yellow chartreuse), tab of black, 6 strands of orange and 5 strands of watermelon. This would make up a 55 strand skirt. I get most of all of my skirts from fishingskirts.com   If you think there is too much black in there take some out and add more yellow to balance it off.

Top: Barbed Green Pumpkin or Watermelon Fish scale.

Mid/bottom: Pearl White or Yellow then right under it ill throw in 4-6 strands of orange then cut them back 3/4 of the way to make it look like a fin.

Thanks for all your feedback.  I will post pics when I get some skirts built.

Felix, for yellow perch here is my new version, go to Lure Parts Online, and under the skirt material you will see one called "Real Bait", then you want number 111 which is yellow perch. The color by itself is more like a yellow gold but what I do is use a full tab of that with a 1/2 tab of watermelon barbed wire on top with a 1/2 tab of white or pearl on bottom with 2 strands, yes, just 2 strands of orange under the white. So you should end up with 46 strands or close to it, maybe 48 but the watermelon barbed wire with the little bit of black and the lighter green really gets picked up by the yellow gold of the real bait yellow perch tab. You can also use the yellow perch tabs straight up and they will look good, I've done it and I liked the result but more importantly, the fish did as well.

Not everyone agrees with this, but when I am making a skirt for say a perch or bluegill I try to factor in whether I will imitating a perch or bluegill around grass or around rock for instance. If around grass, I throw in lighter colors, if rock darker colors. It may as subtle as choosing watermelon over green pumpkin or vice versa or adding 4 or so strands of smoke brown to go darker. Just my two cents. I also recommend checking out the yellow watermelon on that site you've been getting stuff from.

This is an old pic of one I made. It's a little gaudy and bright bur works well in stained water. Prob more natural with less orange, a green scale back, and align the yellow/black skirt better

I think the yellow with black stripes is called Yellow Jacket?? from FS.com
