Shad, Bluegill, Or Bass Pattern Popper?

Featured Replies

What's your favorite pattern of popper to throw? Shad? Bluegill? Bass? Something else?

Bone. That goes for most of my top water hard baits. Bone or black, depending on the light level.

The fish will be looking up at the bait seeing mostly the underbelly. I was always under the impression the pattern isn't super important as long as it's a natural color and not hot orange.

My most successful poppers and walking baits have been in baby bass colour. Pop-X and Zippin-Ziggy...

DJ I have caught many fish on a firetiger pattern super spook and Rapala popper. When they hungry they don't seem to mind.  :tongue8:

I like something that's kind of clear, and then one with a white belly and a splash of orange.

think it depends on lake and time of year.  if the bluegill are popping the water, anything with some orange on the bottom.  although my PB came on a baby bass POP-R.

My most productive popper has been a Rapala Skitter Pop in Firetiger  :eyebrows:

White.

All of those patterns are pointless and are just there so a tackle company can take your money.  I like different patterns on my baits....that is except for topwater.  The pattern is to sell to you, not the fish.

Look at the belly of them all.  Now think about what the fish sees.

White or Black with the majority of your use being White.  All the rest of it is a waste of resources.  This is why when you see a pro throwing a topwater when they are serious about what they are doing and not making commercials, 90% of the time it's bone color.

That being said, I also like a firetiger in muddy water but I dont think it does anything a black one will not.  It's just a confidence thing for me but at least I realize it.

A thread fin shad imitator, white belly with a red lip. Xcalibur Zel Pop is my favorite.
