Been in IT now since graduating from college in 2005. Started out building commercial web based agriculture applications that changed farming for ever. Moved from that into making parts applications with a company who had a contract with Mecury Marine. Migrated back into ag based software before spending the last 2.5 years at my almamater in IT building servers, taking care of desktop support, student records you name it and I did it.

 

One thing that was required while being there was to create a LinkedIn account. I basically treated it as a living resume, documenting all my projects. About a month ago I get a contact request from a gorgeous young woman who was working for a staffing company I had dealt with prior. One thing led to another and she asked me if I had any interest in moving on.

 

I was not actively looking for employment and told her that at the get go. She advised me to have a look at the position anyhow, looked and it was almost as if my resume was written for the job. I decided to apply for the position and interview. I went into the interview with the mindset that I was gonna speak about what I knew, give no bs, have no real intention of the position but hear what they had to say. Told them from day one, the only way I would ever leave was significant financial gain.

 

A week later the offer hit my email, the increase was 150% of my current salary. Needless to say I accepted that offer. Had I not had the schooling, the background in software, the background in networking and the ability to give a presentation to any size crowd I dont know if I wouldve been offered the position. When you have the ability to get comfortable talking in front of a large audience it definitely will help in the future. I was the fifth candidate in the interview process, which started back in November!

 

Never ever turn down the opportunity to do something different, its those differences that make you desireable when the moment of truth comes. It was funny, my last day we had a staff meeting and our guest speaker was someone on customer service. He stated in his market research that two candidates with identical resumes, the person who can speak to a crowd always wins.

 

We have been in the market for a house and looking for a year now, things just got a whole lot easier.

Thanks, its always weird leaving the known for the unknown but I have some contacts in the company who made the choice a tad easier. I always wanted to go back and work for the school, I actually wanted to teach but that wasnt in the cards at the time. The school is very small, it graduates about 300 a year, my class in my major had 4 grads in 2005. The school is more like a family than a traditional post secondary school, they bend over backwards to make sure you get a good affordable education. They will definitely be missed but there comes a time I guess to choose between whats best for your family and where you want to work. What I understand about the new company is that its very similar so it should be an easy transition.

 

I actually went from working in an educational environment to working in software again based on K-12 education so its not a huge transition.

 

My career is a very stable one for the most part, however if I could go back I wouldve rather had a degree in something outside. I think most any outdoorsman probably feels that way.

I fed him well over the winter, im saving for a new truck/boat and we need to get on this house thing. We had found one, wanted to go back for a second look and the day before we did they accepted another offer ugh.
