Mean Mouth Bass ?

Featured Replies

What exactly is it ?  from my understanding it is a hybrid , something like a mix between a Small Mouth and a Spotted Bass , a friend and I were having a conversation about these fish and there is not a ton of info other than to say these fish are rare , most info seems to be associated with the mid West region , described as aggressive and slightly on the toothy side , not like piranha per say .

This is about the best pic I can find of one , if it actually is one .

ever lipped a shoal bass? They have very long teeth. the last 5 I've lipped have drawn blood. Wouldn't surprise me that there tooth patch is more pronounced as most spotted bass tend to be more toothy than lm

In the waters that they occur naturally, they really aren't that rare, maybe not an everyday occurance, but certainly not rare. I fish Table Rock a few times every year where it isn't uncommon to catch a largemouth, spot, smallie, and meanie, all in the same day. I can't say that they really fight any harder and I've never noticed their teeth/tooth pads being any more pronounced?

I've always been under the impression they are a spot/smallie hybrid however? That article is the first time I've ever seen them listed as a largemouth/smallmouth hybrid.

I've only ever caught one keeper. It was a couple years ago fishing Table Rock with my wife in February on an A-rig. Didn't seem like it fought any harder, but it was one of the hardest strikes I can ever remember getting from a 16" bass.

I'm sure it's similar to a Tiger Musky which is a naturally occurring cross breed of Northern Pike and Musky.

I think you misunderstood what I meant. The "Mean Mouth" is a cross between a Smallmouth Bass and Largemouth Bass. Just like the Tiger Musky is a cross between a Musky and Northern Pike. I know the Tiger Musky and Mean Mouth look nothing alike, but they're both the result of natural cross breading.

Thank you for the clarification , I did get your point , however , my reference was to the " mean mouth " that fish of yours has big guy , I don't mind catching them , they just always leave me with a mark to make sure I remember no matter how careful I am LOL !!   I don't think they like me too much !!

Haha yeah you've got to watch yourself with them. The best way to handle the smaller (up to about 30") is to grab them with your hand over your back like this

If they get bigger than that, you can grab their jaw bone behind their gill plate like this

Just don't stick your hand in too far because you'll get cut like no other!

Haha that one was barely a keeper. The minimum is 40" and that was 41" it attacked a smallie that I was fighting! No problem man anytime!
