20 Lb Braid?

Featured Replies

Hi All

Last night I put 20lb braid on my jerkbait / topwater rod on a Lews bait caster. Is that diameter too thin to where it will dig in to my spool? Trying braid this year.

Thanks

Tom

Did you put like a mono backing on? I've never had any problem with 30lb but never used 20lb

No, I used all braid. Thinking I may have issues.

Nah, 20 is what I use on all my baitcasters and works fine.

All braid digs in. I personally don't drop below 50# on casting gear, but that's up to you.

Cool, we will see how it goes.

Ive got 40 lb braid on my pitching / jigging rod and 12 Fluoro on my crank rod.

I use 20 on my bait casters, but I use mono backing.  No problems at all.

Braid will dig in if you over tighten your drag. If you don't pull the line hard with the reel when you snag, it should not be a problem.

If you got it on tight while spooling up, I think you'll be fine.  I use 20lb on my Curado 50e and haven't had any issues, try to keep from having tight line over the top of slack line and you'll be alright.

Awesome, thanks for the advice all.

Keep an eye on how the line lays, if your spool stops due to a dig in or backlash you will be snapping the heavier, better casting plugs off and sending them into orbit (traps for example).

I use 15, 20, and 30 on all mine.  Never had an issue, but like stated above by a few, all have mono backing as I have about 130yrds of braid on each even with the backing just so I can keep the spool full without using all 300yrds.  If you're worried, find a spare reel, spool it up with the braid you have, put on some mono backing, and re-fill. Also, KVD line conditioner helps break in the braid a bit easier depending on the brand purchased.

I use 20lb braid on multiple casting setups, but never without backing. So you might want to take it off, put some backing on, and then put it back on. But, as I said, I use it on multiple casting set ups (as well as 30 + 50 lb braid) and have no issues. My jerkbait/topwater rod is one of them.

I use down to 10lb power pro, no problems at all.
