Rapala top waters

Featured Replies

Has anyone had any luck with Rapala Sketter props or Skitter pops? Also, what would the best color be. I am kind of leaning towards the frog pattern but I don't know if the lure works. Got any ideas or stories??????

Well almost any lure will "work" if used in the right place and at the right time. When the popper bite is on, I really like the skitter pop, frog is my favorite color, but silver is a good one too. I am not much of a prop bait fisherman, I have a few , but rarely use them. I will go with poppers, frogs, buzzbaits, and walk the dog baits over props 99.9% of them time.

Stories............well hows this, one day last summer was fishing a pretty thick milfoil mat with a floating hollow bodied frog, was getting huge blow ups on it evry time I stopped it  in an open spot and started to move it again, but was failing to hook up with any thing. I even tossed a senko in those holes after a few of the misses but came up with nothing. I decided to try a skitter pop in there, but man was it tight, open spots about the size of a hub cap in milfoil so thick you could walk across it, I basicly "flipped" a top water bait. well that did the trick, put it in the hole, popped it a few times and bam, fish on.......did this at most of the holes I missed fish on the frog and/or senko, and hooked and landed several nice bass. Just an example of me "guessing right" that day as to what the fish wanted

The SkitterPop is an excellent lure.  It spits more than it "chugs".  I like the shad finish.

I have also done well on the skitter pop, but my favorite rapala topwater has to be the original floating rapala.

I use them and you won't go wrong with them. My best colors are Black & Silver, Shad, Blue chrome And Frog colors.

just stick to natural colors for were your fishing such as shad or bluegill in open water or frog pattern i lilly pads or weeds

I have to agree with WAbass  the original Floating Rapala is my favorite topwater bait by along shot throw them around rocks and stumps etc. and twitch them a few times and hold on.Like any other top water try to resist setting the hook until you feel the line start to tighten up

I've never used  a skitter prop, but I absolutely love the skitter pop. The frog and shad patterns have worked best for me.

I also caught a bass the first time I tried the skitter walk so you might want to add that to the mix.

As for the original floating rapala minnow, it has a special place in my heart, because I caught my first bass with one, a size 5 in the green minnow (not real name, but it has a dark green back with a white belly) color.

I agree jdw174 that the skitter pop spits more than it chugs. In addition to making it spit, I like to use a downward movement of my rod (you're making the plastic nose dive into the water vs. dragging it along the water's surface) to get the lure to make a nice "plop" sound. It's hard for me to describe but it is a cool sound hear and one that seems to drive bass nutty.

RAPALA SKITTER POPS HAVE WORKED WELL FOR ME NOT MUCH LUCK WITH THEIR PROP BAITS, HEDDON MAKES A PROP BAIT THAT IVE HAD A LOT OF LUCK WITH.

i think the poster above is reffereing to the heddon torpedo? Anyways I have both the prop and pop as well as skitterwalks and my favorite out of them all in the skitterwalk. It has good walk the dog action and drives bass nuts. In my opinion they all produce decent results and you can't go wrong if you fish them the right way in the right conditions( early morning/ late evening)
