Shaky worms and jig heads

Featured Replies

I am a newbie when it comes to the shaky worm, but I have recently purchased some zoom trick worms. What would be the best jig head to use for a shaky worm?

a guy that goes by the name "harshman" makes some good ones, and Spot Removers are nice too

I have yet to master this technique myslef, but played around with it alot at the end of last season, I have only used the spot remover heads, so far I like them, this year I am going to add some of the Tru-Tungsten Ikey Heads.

I used mainly Zoom trick and/or finesse worms, and had decent results. Played around with some differnt baits , like flukes, craws, and also got some of the new Zoom shakey tail worms to add to the mix this year.

The technique is very simple. You dead stick the shakey worm with a twitch of the rod tip now and then. DRAG it back to the boat...DO NOT hop it like a regular jig. Let the shakey worm do the work. Generally the correct shakey worm has no salt in it and will float the tail up with plenty of built in action. Use a rod that is light to medium action with a fast tip. ALSO use a light line 6 - 8 lb is good. I also use fluorocarbo for my shakeys. You can't go wrong as long as you fish it S~L~O~W.

Check out our website to see how to rig the shakey worm and also how ours looks in the water tank. We designed this bait especially for the shakey technique.

i use spot removers a lot but also like a plain ball head jig head as well.  i havent tried the ikey heads yet but they look like a good option as well.

Bite-me heads are the best I have used. I consider a spot-remover a shakey head, Its more of a stand-up jig that has it place also. Which calls for a different fishing technique. I haven't found a way that a shakey-head(modifyed ballhead jig) doesnt work in when the bite gets tough. Netbait and zoom finesse worms work best for me.

I haven't tried them for shakey heads yet, but on the show, "The Bass Pros," KVD was using the Strike King 3x worms on shakey heads and on film, their action looks awesome.  The worm floats so it sticks straight up when stopped and it wiggles very enticingly.  I'm going to try some with spot remover jigs and see how they work.

I most often use the 3X SK finesse 7" worm on a Davis ballhead jig.  Sometimes use the long shank one, sometimes not.  When I use another worm (non 3X) I will often add a Tru-Turn HitchHiker.  You can attach it to the eyelet or shank as you see fit.  Seems to extend the life of the worm considerably.

I normally use a M to MH spinning rod with 8-10 lb test and just about any retrieve imaginable.

senile, its really tough getting those 3x worms on a shakey head screw , or a peg like the spot removers. The material that the worm is made out of makes it like that...i would suggest the bite me jighead for the 3x

I've been using the bite me ball head jigs for this with zoom worms.  The only concern I have with these are the worm needs to be big enough to fit around the top(the little part that comes out to hold it in place).  Other wise you will go through a few worms because the top gets torn open where you can't use them anymore.  If you're looking for a color, try watermelon green.

The 3X worms are just about useless on any screw in head or spot remover peg. I like the 3X worms for shaky head fishing but I have to use a regular ball head to penetrate them.

Berkley just put out some Power Bait Shaky worms.....I could probably go ahead and trash all my other shaky worms right now. That Power Bait shaky worm is sure to be a killer.

I noticed the same thing.  But one simple tweak you can do is just clip a little bit of the (soft) metal off that keeper.  Your basic clippers (e.g, if you keep toenail clippers for cutting line) will do the trick no problem.  You'll find that it still holds the bait on nicely, without absolutely destroying your soft plastics.

Thanks fopr the Promo Bass XL, I do make shaky head jigs that I call Harsh Hedz check out my website for pics and how to order them if anybody is interested. my costs are reasonable and I only charge you what it cost me to ship the order not some over inflated shipping and handling fees

My personal favorite is Gamakatsu ball head jig

The tungsten heads are pretty nice.  Don't forget the "Bite me" heads either, good hooks on them too.

Zoom finesse worms, berkley worms they all work, use what you have confidence with.

Am I the only one here to use a senko on a spot remover????  Tell me it isn't so!!

It's the ultimate dead stick.  Very little action so you have to twitch it slightly but the more aggressive fish like them.  Sometimes you have to find the right color though.  I prefer a camo color blend in various colors like crawfish color and a brown blend or a green and brown.  It only seems to work on aggressive fish though.

When the fish are not as aggressive, you can't go wrong with a finesse worm for catching numbers.  Not quality fish but just catching anything beats no catch at all.  Motor oil color with a curled tail is my favorite color for this tecnique.  I've caught fish in terrible conditions with this bait tactic.  It's one of my preferred go-to baits when the bite is tough.  I usually manage to find a fish near structure with this.  Find a tree or downed brush, throw the bait just past it and walk it by.  "Ringing the doorbell" is what I call it.  See if anyone is home! ;D
