Crankbait Hook Sets

Featured Replies

There was a thread on here the other day explaining how to get a better hookset with Texas rigs.

For the cranking guys, how do you go about getting the best hookset when you feel the weight of the fish on your line. I'm used to just doing a 9:00 sweep, some of which i land and others throw the treble hooks fairly easy. Help?

Hold your tip down and keep crankin on em I dont jerk as many times I have ripped it out of their lip.

it depends on the rod, and line you are using.

braid and graphite rod------> increase reel speed and do a small sweep set...

mono/floro and graphite rod-----> increase reel speed and do a medium sweep set...

braid with glass rod------> increase reel speed and do a moderately hard sweep set...

mono/floro with a glass rod-----> reel hard and do either the same or a little bit harder sweep set than with braid...

just general guidelines, conditions and bait may change these a bit, but they area  good starting point... check out some of the footage from table rock to see how the pro's set cranks using glass rods and floro or mono...

To elaborate on what Mitch said, the more give you have in your line/rod combo, the more hook set you need. I prefer fluoro for my cranking and I prefer a long and not-so-rigid rod, so I give it a little more sweep than some. Still though, it is nothing like the hook sets I will use while flipping/pitching. Much less.

Sweep your rod, reel down quickly and then lift your rod tip firmly.

Constant pressure is the key, the fish will set the hooks, usually

very deeply!

And then sometimes... they just don't strike it how they should. Change color

Thanks guys. That helps a lot. I'm usually pretty good at sweeping when I feel the weight of the fish, but I wanted some re assurance just in case there was a better method.

I always give it one more controlled tug after the initial sweep set.

These tips are all good and well until you get short lined while pulling up a deep crankbait..... :cry4:

A nice solid sweep is all that is needed.

Generally a solid sweep the left then rod tip goes vertical landed all 25 bass doing this yesterday

X2 ~ Well said.

I do not use fluorocarbon line in any capacity but do use a few different combinations of glass and graphite sticks with braid & mono line.

The one thing I'll add is it does seem to me that the heavier the mono, the less line stretch I perceive.

So I'll adjust my tackle, hook sets and fish fighting accordingly.
