Does anyone have a good set of instructions for making your own rod locker rod holders? I know that people make them using golf tubes but I can't find good plans or descriptions...

Ditch the tube idea and go with rod socks and stacking them on top of each other.

Rod holders on boats are usually the first thing that goes

That is what I currently do anyways!

Then your set, you can also invest in some reel covers to help rash

I believe BassnChris made one awhile back and posted pics here. I think he used some ABS plastic and golf club tubes. 

used the plastic cutting boards i picked up at walmart and some golfclub tubes.

 

I traced/cut out cardboard until I had the right pattern and then traced it onto the cutting boards with sharpie. trimmed the pattern and used holesaw.

I did not put in after recarpeting and went the rod sock path.............for 2 trips. last Sunday I put the storage back in and returned the socks.......hated messing with the socks......still have them form my spinning gear though.

 

And the plastic wrap on the rod has long since been removed...........now.

 

 

NOTE the carpeted 2x4 used to wedge in the butt rack end.

I purchased them at a local golf store.

Walmart used to sell them in the golf section. Not sure if they still do or not.

You mean the factory built in rod holders that a new boat came with, you ditched them? Did you break some rods?

Yep, I ditched the factory built.  They don't work well with long rods and I had problems in  a previous boat with them.

I saw them at Wollyworld for $129 each.

I have rods up to 8' with most over 7-6.  If you only have a few in the box it's not a problem.  With a full box the tips come out of the tubes and get tangled and bend or break the guides.  Plus with tubes you are limited to 12.  Using socks with out tubes, eliminates both problems.  On a tournament day, I have as many as 14 in the box.
