Chris Lane Boat On Fire

Featured Replies

That really sucks. Ant ideas on why it would it would happen?  My guess is that the charger sparked and that caused it.

That sucks a lot. Having trouble picturing KVD motoring up to him and asking if he wants a couple crankbaits haha.

I heard about this I am wondering if what the other pros were saying is true about someone stealing tackle and then setting the boat on fire? I am also wondering if it could be those lithium batteries.

hes been doing well, wouldnt surprise me if someone had an axe to grind. some people just cant stand to see someone out do them in anything.

We need to know the cause of the fire.

First time I have read where a bass boat caught on fire while sitting on the trailer.

Very dangerous situation and I am sure we will read more on the situation as the local fire marshals inspect the boat.

Should be very interesting to note what say cause the fire.

I have not seen anything real to the idea that this was done maliciously. It was most likely a battery/electrical fire.

Batteries have been known to quite literally explode. If he was running lithiums which I am guessing he was, it compounds that issue. Lithium is very very very reactive when it comes in contact with water.

They said the tackle was gone in the blaze too. What was cool was that other anglers were offering him gear to use so he can fish.

since some of the tackle was just completely gone, they did suspect theft as cause/motive........ will be interested to see what shakes out.

on the batteries, A-Mart was the first to use them (IIRC).... it would be a shock if the batteries were the cause as the research is LONG for that type of thing...not saying it cant happen, just would be a shock.

IMO I can't see how the batteries by themselves could've caused it. Not saying impossible, but not likely to me. Those batteries should have been QC'd a bunch beforehand in production.

See Boeing 787 Dreamliner lithium battery issues. Infinitely more research and testing is put into airplane safety/tech and they still had battery fire issues multiple times.

there are MILLIONS of Lithium batteries out there.... because a few planes catch fire proves nothing.

and I am still going to be somewhat shocked if is a battery issue.

not looking to argue, because it makes no difference to me either way.

I just got back from dardanelle, I was a marshal at this event and heard it was a problem with the charger. He went to plug in his charger Wednesday night and it wouldn't work so he went to walmart and bought a cheap charger. I'm not sure if it was a trickle charger or not but he said he just plugged it in and went inside and to bed. The hotel called him in the middle of the night and told him he should move his boat as one was on fire in the parking lot. He said he went out and it was his boat on fire. During the fog delay Friday I heard his brother saying he didn't think it was vandalism just a bad or wrong charger.

that explains the charger sitting on the back deck.

THANKS for posting

I saw this, it goes to show what kind of people bass anglers and fisherman in general are..... How much help was offered to them

Cheap electronics = no bueno

Are you implying that another BASS Elite competitor set his boat on fire?

I don't think he was necessarily implying an Elite competitor. Anyone could have an axe to grind. I think that scenario is HIGHLY unlikely, though. Electrical fire is the most probably cause.

Perhaps a short on his trickle charge wire resulted in overheated wire which melted the insulation and thus caused arching / sparking with other wires it came in contact with which resulted in the fire.   The overheating of the trickle charge wire could also have resulted in the lithium battery over-heating and resulted in the fire.  These trickle charge wires can get extremely hot when there is a short.

I have had personal experience with over-heating charge wires.

To explain why the bow was also on fire, I feel this has a lot to do with the ventilation tunnels of the boat from stern to bow.  Also, later model boats are accessorized with ventilation fans in the compartments which could have contributed to the spread of the fire from the stern to the bow???? Perhaps the fans were left on???

Now, with the respect to some of the tackle missing, I do not recall this being stated in any report submitted by the investigators?

Chris Lane is one of the nicest guys on tour. I find it highly unlikely that someone had an axe to grind with him.
