First Time Fishing From Kayak - Success!

Featured Replies

Yesterday was the day I have been waiting for all year - fishing my the kayak I bought over the winter.  I used it once about a month ago but didn't fish from it.  I got it back then to try it out on the water and paddle around.  I also had the help of one of my brothers and he helped me unload it.

So yesterday was my first official time to fish from it solo.  My kayak is a Wilderness Systems Ride 115.

I took two rods with me and to be honest - yesterday was really about me seeing what it's like to paddle around with two rods and a tackle bag and how to manage everything.  I really wasn't planning on catching any fish.

So what happens?  I catch a small bass on a Zoom trick worm.  Fun.  Now get this - I've never caught a bass on a crankbait before.  I had one tied on because I figured I was not going to catch anything anyway.   So I figured I would throw it around just to play with more than anything.  Guess what happens?  I find a spot and on the first cast into that spot with a cranbait a big big bass grabs a hold and it pulls me to the shore!  I didn't weigh it but it is without a doubt the largest bass I have caught in my one and a half years of bass fishing.  Amazing!

VERY nice fish. I see he took you for a little ride. You may want to thing about a net. It really helps sometimes. You'll quickly become addicted from YAK fishing. I did!! Todd

I recently bought a Ride 115x and I am loving it!  Congrats on the new Yak and those fish.  Kayak fishing is certainly addicting!

Cool!!!  I have yet to get out my motor boat this year due to buying a yak in the fall.  I have fished two tournaments with it already and it is a lot of fun.  Definitely easier on the wallet too.  Great to see you had some success!!!

Nice fish. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one hessitant of lipping a bass full of treble hooks.

Nice Bass!!

Sweet fish! I fish primarily from a tube and love fishing at water level. I swear the fish fight harder.

Nice bass OP! Can you do me and maybe others a favor and give a quick review of your kayak. Likes, dislikes, for those of us looking to buy.

Thanks in advance and good luck fishing!

What kind/brand of kayak do you have and do you enjoy using it and fishing from it?  I'm in the market for sit in kayak.

Hoosierbass07- my kayak is a pelican that I turned into a fishing rig. I installed some rod holders and other things. I love fishing from it, had it for few years now.

You've been having a really slow season so far right? I can't remember if it was you that was catchn a few dinks here/there and your son was outfishing you? Anyways dude Congrats, that video was awesome! Now that you've gone mobile a whole slew of spots will be open to you! Here's to a year of PBs!!

I just got a Pelican Trailblazer 100 kayak. Has 2 rod holder and I added another. Was on sale for 200 bucks. Went out for the first time Sunday. So much fun.

Was fishing my local quarry lake Sunday and was casting a weightless Senko into deep water and catching suspended fish. It was awesome. Im so addicted. Cant wait for this weekend!
