What size of Hooks do you all use when your throwing a BIG worm.  Im talking a 10-12" even that 15" netbait C Mac.  The biggest hooks I have are 5/o Gamakatsu hooks, thinking about getting some that are bigger for my big worms. Ive been throwing all my worms on these 5/o hooks but wondering if i should throw a longer hook.

The long worms I throw or am getting for this season:

5/O owner J hook most of the time. I have tried the oversize owners but like the J hook better.

You could go to a 6/0, or try an EWG. But I think you will be fine with most big worms sticking with your 5/0s.

7/0 Owner Oversize

I try to use the smallest hook possible. On the 10" annies, I will try a 5/0, if I have problems with hook ups, I'll go to a 6/0. No EWG's for me.

About 90% of the time i use the gamakatsu 5/o EWG.  I have some straight shanks too.  I may look into getting a pack of 6/o but it sounds like 5/o and 6/o are pretty common. Thanks friends!

When there's not a ton of weeds. Seems like the EWG hook seem to collect more than a worm, or straight shank hook. Most of the lakes I fish have a bunch of snot grass during the late spring, and summer, that's when I use a non EWG hook.

X2.   I use that hook for all those worms that you mentioned.

I know the "by the book" answer is thickness dictates hook size but when you start getting into 12 to 15'' worms a longer shanked hook, like the 7/0 owner, makes alot of sense to me.

Why..?

I use 6/0-7/0 EWG hooks on 10" worms

I'll also use an oversized 5/0 straight shank on 9-10" worms (like a trokar flipping hook....only 100 dollars a hook!)

I think the gap is more important than the length of the hook.  I too try to go with the smallest hook I can get away with.  I don't like it when you have a hook shank protruding 2" (or whatever) out the side of the worm.
