They are fished on top.  Cast out and start reeling right when it hits the water so the bait lifts back to the top of the water.  For me, once I get the the bait on plane, a slower chugging retrieve works best most of the time. Good luck!

Just cast and retrieve. Its a topwater lure, so as soon as it hits the water, be ready to reel up to get it back on top. Oh, and hang on, because they smoke em.

Go to the Fishing Articles page and then click on Fishing Lures. You will find several articles about fishing a buzzbait. My main advice is don't hesitate to use them during the middle of the day. Some of my biggest fish have been caught this way.

I like to go as slow as possible while staying on top.  then work it faster if the fish wants it that way.

Nothing better or funner then a good buzz bait bite

Use a fast ratio reel and heavier line (no lighter than 12 pound test for even 1/4 ounce buzzbaits) and a slower action rod. Cast out and reel in fast enough to keep the bait on top, but as slow as possible while still keeping it gurgling on the surface. My advice is to get some cavitron buzzbaits, they are better than all the others.

I dont like buzzbaits but I'm gonna modify my terminator to be more like the cavitron and give it a shot..

I retrieve them as slowly as possible but I like to give them little pops with the rod tip as I'm retrieveing them. It makes them speed up for just a second and spit a little more water and often triggers strikes.

I agree with Blue-- I pop it as well and give it somewhat of an erratic retrieve. I believe it gets the attention of the bass and has it believe that another bass or fish missed the forage. They are opportunists and will investigate where the sound or commotion  is coming from..OFTEN triggering strikes.

i always start reeling about a foot from hitting water so runs immediately on surface.i  give twitches occasionally  to look as if a small bunch of shad fleeing.

Like DDAY said -start reeling and lifting your rod tip right before it hits the water-DO NOT LET IT SINK--I cant tell you how many times I had gotten strikes as soon as it hit the water

Oh, and get a Cavitron, best buzzbait advice I ever got Any color works as long as it's black on black   My first time fishing a Cavitron resulted in this, all on a 3/8oz black on black Cavitron.

I fished a ghost minnow cavitron from 7-8:30 tonight and landed 9. Buzzbait bite is hot right now.

I know it's already answered, but one more tip is to use a trailer hook.

Since using a trailer hook I land more fish because it reduces the short strikes.

 

My personal preference is attach the trailer with heavy braid. I like it better than dangling a rigid hook off the back.

and one thing i've learned, don't be afraid to throw it  in some nasty stuff...weeds, etc.  it will come through easier than you might think...

Do any of you guys ever add any kind of trailer? I read an article in a magazine, cant remember which pro it was with.  But in the article he explained that he would either get a blade off of a bigger buzzbait and put it on, or add a trailer...both keep the bait on top of the water at lower speeds.  I havent personally tried this but was wondering if it worked well for anyone else.
