I've been thinking about building my own spinnerbaits.  There is thing I haven't got figured out.  How to paint them.  Does anyone out have any tips on how to paint  a spinnerbait?

When I made mine I went to walmart and bought spraypaint for $.99 a can in the colors I wanted.  Sprayed them and then brushed on a self leveling epoxy that dries clear.  Turned out alot better then when I tried to brush on the paint or the dip heat paint.  Its also alot faster.  I painted about 12 of them in the time of brushing 1 or 2.

i always just buy pre painted spinnerbait forms and then put a skirt on and then put on whatever i want for the blades

you can get the prepainted forms at cabelas.

I use vinyl lure paint. I don't air brush, I paint mine by brush. I have found it doesn't chip as bad as enamel paints.

I have a friend who makes in-line spinner baits and had trouble finding a paint that wouldn't chip when banging off the rocks.  After hearing a commercial on television, he started using his wife's finger nail polish.  Now he is a regular customer for the Avon lady (Ding-Dong ).

Just about everyone who replies to this post is going to give a different answer.  In theory, enamel paints would be the best solution here, but it depends on what you buy.  A high quality vinyl paint will last longer and be more chip resistant than a low quality enamel.

A friend uses Testors brand paint.  These are enamel paints used for models and can be found at just about any hobby store or Wal-Mart.  The number of available colors is nearly limitless.

Here the best way I have found to paint eyes on lures.  Take a wooden pencil and round over the eraser, touch the eraser to the paint and then to the lure and it will make a perfect circle.  Let that dry and then take an eraser with a smaller rounded section and you can put a small pupil inside the previous round eye you painted.  Put the pupil off center like the bait is looking around somewhere.
