Hey guys. Just got my new baitcaster. I was practicing casting in the yard and got an insane backlash. I tried pulling and the line stopped. So I tried the thumb trick about 20 times and it doesn't work. I just got new seaguar red label so I want to try everything before I cut my line. Anyone? I'm going fishing really soon so any quick responses are appreciated. Thanks.

Tighten your tension knob before casting, you ain´t never going to dominate the beast right away, actually you did pretty well, 20 casts, very nice, I backlashed my first baitcaster in the first attempt. Start tight and practice until you get the hang of it, then reduce the settings a little bit and practice some more and .... you guess what´s next don´t you ?

To get the birdsnest out push the release button and gently pull the line until you see where the loop is and use a pick or even a toothpick and insert the pick into the loop and pull it out.  Then pull the line again and repeat until you get all the loops free.  No guarantees, but worth a try.  Fluoro is the worst for this.  One of the reasons I switched to braid.

Ya. I tried but there is so much line popping out that I can't get to the loops. I will try tho. It's worth a shot. C'mon guys keep replying while I try this. I know there has got to be some more tricks.

not sure of any tricks aside from just slowly picking it apart.....

my suggestion though is to practice with some super cheapy mono until you've got it down for practice, then step up to some better line when the time comes to catch some fish....

You went wrong by pulling on it first. That tightens the knots and loops. Once fluoro is kinked like that it's junk. Bite the bullet and cut it off. When you re-spool, pull off 1 1/2 casts worth of line and run a strip of electrical tape around the spool. That will keep any inevitable backlashes from getting too deep.

IMHO I think braided line is best for learning to use a baitcaster because it has little memory and is more forgiving when you backlash, as in it won't kink up and turn to junk like DVT mentioned

The truth is you will have to cut the line anyway, that kinked line is no longer good, cut the line and spool the cheapest nylon you can get to practice.

Not true, or at least not for me, when I backlash I do it with passion, all the way down to the spool, never liked to do things halfways.

Alright guys. I started to cut my line, and I cut everything on the surface that was popping out. I found the end that was connected to the line that was around the spool. I pulled and pulled, and ended up not even taking off 20 yards. Maybe like 15 yards. So I have about 110 yards of untangled unbacklashed line ready togo. Thanks DVT and everyone else that helped me on my first really bad backlash!

Pick it out, and cut it off where it's kinked. Fluorocarbon is toast once you get a good bend in the line. Red Label is pretty manageable though, and is a good line. Don't give up on it.

On topic, if you only had lost a few yards you only had a minor professional overrun. A real backlash runs deep!

Go to walmart and buy yourself a bulk spool of Berkley Big Game mono. Cheap to learn on and it's actually decent line.

Ya I ended up cutting another piece of line that I shouldn't have. I casted again in my yard today but had more room to cast farther. I casted and a good length of line with my jig on it came off and the line left got tangled under another knot. Not a backlash but a wierd not that I can't get out. I now only have 30 yards or less so I'm just gonna take it off and get some cajun line. Is cajun Ref Lightning good for a pro qualifier baitcast reel? I've used it and like it, I just don't know if I'm gonna buy it and end up screwing it up again. Let me know. Thanks

braid aint the answer to everything.

OP needs to tighten spool tension/set more brakes.

run before you walk......you'll be flinging it out there backlash free in no time.

Get 12# or 14# and you'll be fine.
