Finding Smallmouth

Featured Replies

Hey guys I'm heading up to my camp in central maine next week to fish a lake I've never been to for smallmouth. I am wondering where I should look to find these smallies? What kind of cover and structure do they like and what works well around it? Will I find any decent fish in shallow this time of year? Also by just looking at a map of the lake what areas should hold fish? Any info would help! Thanks!

I'm not sure on what type of water temps you have but my #1 thing I would search for first is rocky points.  Either Primary or Secondary.    If there are docks or seawalls fish those also.  Especially if they have rock.

Yup - deep rocks - the bigger the better.

I always have trouble fishing rocks, are tubes the bait to use or is there down thing that works better in those areas? Thanks for the input!

tubes work well, drag a crawfish color tube where theres smallies and it will get bit. try a dropshot with various plastics, football jigs, shakey heads, topwater, spinnerbaits, lipless cranks, etc

Carolina Rig deep rocks, even better if there is a weed bed nearby.
