I'm fishing a small few hundred acre lake that's muddy so I need to know which color to purchase. Does the top matter? Or is the belly the main issue here?

The top doesn't matter of course because the fish can't see it! I'd go with black.

In muddy water? If visibility is 1 foot or below I like black

Now what about a very clear lake? Very Slightly stained?

I carry black and frog color. Got all the bases covered.

Which colordo you guys think most closely replicates shad? Also, what colors are considered chrome?

When I use poppers in clear water I use a white or bone colored belly or a natural bluegill color scheme. Those are the two basic food groups where I fish. Bluegill/perch and minnows. We have leopard frogs and they have white bellies as well so the white ones cover that. 

Any thing with a dark belly.

I really like the coach dog color which is the one that looks like a zebra pattern with some orange on the bottom, the bottom is your most important thing to look at, the skirt as well.
