Finding The Right Reel

Featured Replies

What would be the best spinning reel to fit my st croix 6,6 med fast action spinning rod. I want the best reel for the money preferably under 100 dollars.

Do you want the BEST reel... or a reel priced under 100 dollars?  Those options are mutually exclusive.

"mutually exclusive"??  how so?  as i read it...he wants the best reel priced under $100...that is not mutually exclusive.  he is simply looking for the best value at $100.  is he not?

while there is no clear cut answer...(as we will soon find out...when the repsonses come in)..opinions will vary...and that is what he is looking for...he wants to makes the best, educated decision based on what feedback he gets here.

as for my opinion... Pflueger makes the best spinning reel for the money.  for $100...the Supreme would be my choice.  i own 2 and they have performed flawlessly.

Yes best reel priced under 100 dollars

Mitchell 300PRO or Quantum Antix or Hellcat

X2 on the pflueger.

Also, I have been pleasantly surprised by the quantum accurist pt. I had no intention of purchasing one until I found it for $40 last year at gander mtn's black Friday sale. It is normally priced in the $90 range, so the deal was too good to pass up. I'm sure they were probably cleaning out to make room for the newest version. In any case, I have been very, very impressed.

I would advise against the bottom shelf stuff from quantum though. I recently bought a cheap-o for one of my bluegill/crappie rigs and was highly disappointed in it compared to the entry level Abu Garcia's that I have had for the same purpose. All the same, quantum's higher end models (and I know they go a lot more expensive still) are pretty top notch, and I have loved my accurrist. I just used it the other day to horse in a 15-20 pound turtle that I hooked while bottom fishing for channel cats. Smooth as silk.

Shimano symetre or Shimano Sahara.

What he said

Pflueger supreme at exactly 100 dollars. Pflueger purist for under 100.

Pflueger would be my suggestion, too.  I have an older Pflueger President that is my favorite.

What is the best spinning reel I can get around 100 dollars or less? I have a 6,6 med fast st croix. So which size of the reel should I get? There's just so many options shimano Sahara, pflueger president, shimano symetre... What should I get for the money?

Shimano saharas are hard to beat..

I've got an Abu Garcia Soron STX that I really like.  Good Discount on FFO.  Smooth drag is the most important component of a spinning reel.

Buy a 2500 shimano or 6930 Pfluguer and enjoy your purchase by catching fish.

Shimano all day

Symetre FTW! :)

Sorry, I can't help myself. I've been fishing Symetre's since the 80's and just really love them. They've never let me down! Every time I go to Bass Pro or Cabela's to look at different reels I go back to the Symetre. I guess iffin' it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Anyway, go buy a Symetre 2500. You'll be happy you did.

My father bought a new Supreme this spring. That thing twists line like crazy. Can't say I'm a fan of it.

Sahara or Symetre are both great reels and are in the $79-99 price range. I own both and love them. I also own the $139 Saros, which is just another step better. You won't go wrong with Shimano.

That's a good budget for a spinning reel, you can't go too far wrong. The Pflueger President is a big bang-for-the-buck reel. The Supreme is a step up and right at $99

It doesn't make a whole  lot of difference, buy the one that feels best on your rod and gets an approval from your eye.  Bass are not going put much and and tear a lot on your reels unless you'e catching 10# every single day, if you are then spend more than a $100.

Not trying to be antagonistic, but I don't understand.  I've always blamed line twist on rigs and line - say, a weightless, swivel-less fluke on 10 lb Stren, for example.  But since the mechanics of spinning reels are all pretty much the same, I didn't/don't comprehend how one could be 'worse' than others.
