I was recently fishing in a river near by my place of residence, and I could not believe the amount of weeds. I was fishing from my kayak, so I was right on the water, and I've never seen weeds so thick. Looked like milfoil to me...

Anyway, fish live in weeds, but I could'nt see how it was possible for my lure to get in there, let alone a bass large enough to be worth catching.

So, am I correct? The fish are in there just work the edge, or is it possible that the weeds are just to thick?

 

i guess it depends but for the most part fish can do just fine in the weed and a lot of the mats open up underneath and provide great habitat for the fish.  I fish a lake that has a ton of weeds that almost grow to the surface in a lot of places and i have seen on more than one occasion the bass shoot out of the weeds to nail a crank or fluke just above the tops.  Weeds also can help to purify the water or at least that is what i read somewhere once lol

Ive only fished from a kayak a couple times now and it seems very hard to punch grass in them.

You just can't get that vertical presentations and its hard to yank the bass out, but I'm not experienced with a kayak so I may just be whining haha

It is tougher in a kayak unless you have a kayak you can stand up in.  You will also find that for the most part you don't horse the fish to you but rather keep tension on the fish and pull yourself to the fish.....at least that is what usually happens for me when fishing dense cover like weeds or lilly pads

Throw a nice jig or t-rig in there

Yes there is too much weed when you cant get the boat through it.  You risk getting stuck, or burning up the big motor.

For good bass fishing weeds are very desirable, I go out of my way not to fish those areas.  I enjoy open water fishing with lighter tackle, I may find fewer large fish but I like the kind of fun I'm having better.

I love seeing a bunch of weeds.  The bass will make "highway" like tunnels under them where they travel.  I just toss whatever I had tied on right into the thick of things.  You'll be surprised by all the fish that sit in them.
