For Flipping And Pitching Should You Only Have 1 Centrifugal Brake Or Lowest Number On Magnetic Brake On?

If you are flipping and pitching and have a reel with centrifugal braking should you have only 1 brake on and if you have magnetic braking should it be on the lowest setting (usually 1)?

I go no brakes at all & pretty loose spool tension & control with my thumb. Whatever you feel gets the best results for you . If pitching & casting with the same set up at the same time i usually put 2 breaks on.

On my Orras, Abu marked 3 of the brakes "Pitch" so they're recommended pitch setting is 3 of 6 brakes on, but that's what I use if I'm using that rod for casting and pitching. On my Duckett extra heavy which I basically just flip/pitch I have no brakes on, minimal spool tension and it seems to work well for me. If you so this make sure you pay attention to your thumb tension. Everyone's different just play around with it until you find what works for you, but I'd start with 1-2 brakes on for flippin' and pitchin' (depending on how your reel is) and go from there.

The spool tension has much more braking power than the brakes, it´s important for pitching but not for flipping because in flipping the spool does not rotate, you flip with a certain ammount of line with the spool engaged.

A little bit of brake is nice in case you lose concentration for a second or see a further target to cast to but you shouldn't need much. The exact setting depends on too many variables and preferences to say for someone else.

I find the spool tension adjustment to be of more importance than the brakes.  I generally keep the spool tension very loose, I typically leave my centrifugal brakes set at two, and may increase or decrease the magnetic braking depending on wind.
