Hello,

 

How does one "burn" a lure, and in what circumstances?  What lures?

 

Does this refer to just hydroplaning them over the water?

 

I'm going to get a new reel or two.  One reel has 26 IPT or so and is just a modernized version of what I prefer in round baitcasters.

 

The other one will be an experiment, and burning lures is not something I currently have in my knowledge/experience locker.

 

It might be fun to learn and maybe even do under the right circumstances.  When do you do it?  How do you do it?

In my opinion it just refers to a very fast retrieve, very fast is subjective.

Lighter fluid and a match should do the trick.  Joking!  :  )

 

Burning is a generic term for moving the lure very quickly through the water and is especially effective when the "reactive bite" is on.  This can be applied to just about any lure although some, if you "burn" them too quickly will do cartwheels or other undesireable acrobatics in the water.  A favorite lure to burn is the spinnerbait where you retrieve it at such a speed as to create a "bulge" in the water film and sometimes have the spinner "spit" water onto the surface.  As mentioned already, burning a lure is good when the fish are "reacting" to a fast moving bait.  It can also be good if/when you don't want the fish to get too good a look at your bait.  How, you may ask, do you find this out?  Trial and tribulation, I suppose.

Burning a bait refers to maintaining certain baits at or just below the surface of the water at a consistent high rate of speed. 

Already covered ... Burning a lure to me is to retrieve fast enough to keep it just below the surface of the water OR as fast as possible if it dives.

X2. It is a fast retrieve.

"Fast" is what you think fast is.

Telling too many people about a successful lure is a pretty good way of burning it!

Be my take.

I catch way more bass on the pause then on a very fast retrieve, I seldom burn a lure while bass fishing.  There are species where it's impossible to reel faster than the fish attack, the faster the retrieve the more they are attracted to it.

I Like to burn lipless baits for schooling fish. Just crank it as fast as you can. I don't think you can out crank a bass! 

 

Two weeks ago I ran into a situation like this. Came as close as I have ever come to having a rod ripped out of my hand!!!
