Starts with Stra ends in dic. Shimano Stradic in any of its iterations is tough to argue against. Staying closer to $100 the previous generation of Shimano SSaros is awesome.

I wasn't aware you could buy a "bad" spinning reel in this price range.

If your willing to go to the higher dollar, the shimano stradic ci4+ without a doubt. The patriarch is nice too, but the ones I have seen started grinding after the first year. I like them when they are new though, but they don't seem like they're made to last IMO.

Not the first time I have seen this comment.  I love the looks of the Patriarch, but if I ever win the lottery I guess I would have to go with a Shimano or high end Daiwa.  Of course the Patriarch could last me til I die considering I currently seldom fish a spinning reel.

I bought a team lews gold spinning reel and like it better than any other spinning reel ive ever owned. Ive had several daiwa, shimano, abu garcia, and i also owned a few cheaper pfleugers but this thing blows them all out of the water. Ive got the 30 size reel and its under 8 ounces and holds 140 yards of 10 lb test. No frame flex even with a carbon frame fighting stripers and wipers.

You could but it would be more difficult than finding a good one.  I don't recommend specific brands, as far as I'm concerned anything over a $100 is over kill for a freshwater reel.  Just about every reel I've handled from 50-$100 has been quite smooth, more than adequate drag performance to handle fish up 10#.  My freshwater reels have lasted 5 years or more, I fish everyday too.

I have fell in love with my Abu Garcia SX30. You can get one for around $130. Its very smooth and I have had no ptoblems out of it. Its a little cheaper than the stradic too!

Okuma makes some good spinning reels. I have one of the cheaper models & it has never let me down. Its about 3 years old & still going strong.

My dad bought an Okuma earlier this summer even though he never fishes. I used it two or three times and I have to say, it casts surprisingly far. I had a Abu Garcia Cardinal SX and it sucked. Then again, it was a cheap reel.

There's new Ballistic and Procyon reels out that are superior to the older model.

I primarily use Shimano Stradics, and a Daiwa Lexa 2000.

 

At the bottom of your range, The Lexa is an excellent choice, extremely smooth. Top of your range Stradics. Also in the $100 range, the Symetre.

 

That said, I would not dismiss the new Daiwa Ballistics and Procyons, or the Pfluegers if you like them.

 

The thing for me, I did not like the feel of the Pfluegers when I tested them out in-store. And they were highly recommended to me, I even went in with the intention of buying one, that is until I tried them out in-hand. I left with my first Stradic that day.

 

Everyone is different, so what you may like, I may not, and vice versa. They will all catch fish!

 

Make sure to ask to try models out of the box as opposed to display models...

 

The only time I have not done that - with the Lexa. I rolled the dice on that one and won.

I like my pflueger xt 30 size. Never used a stardic ci4 but I like the xt better than the saros

i am a big fan of the symetre. i have both the 2500 and 3000 sizes and they are both awesome.
