what kind of jig head style is the most versital?

Featured Replies

I'm going to be buying my first jig mold and I was looking at the different styles and wondering if I can only get one now, which style should I start with. I use 3/8 , 1/2 and 3/4 oz. I fish mountain reservoirs in SE Tn and SW Nc with alot of rocky slopes and stump feilds. I have used football heads, snooties, arkies, ball type etc. etc. Any guidance and suggestions would be appreciated.

Exposed Hook: I'd opt for the "Ball-head" jig.

W/ Fiberguard: I'd go with a "Bullet-head" jig (arkie and banana heads are okay)

if your fishing both rocky slopes as well as stump fields and wood you are dealing with the two situations that call for different styles jig heads for me.  i guess the best compromise would be the arkie but i really like football heads in rocks but not in timber.  what the hell get em both.

I would go with the poison.  But with the sizes you throw it would require both molds.  The poison is my favorite style along with the round head weed guards.

Non weed guard go round ball

Your best all around choice (fiberguard) or no that will have better results in a wider variety of areas would probably be a ball head around a 3/8oz size.  I've used that setup for years for skirted jigs and soft plastics alike.  I still use them to this day except with smaller sizes for finesse applications.

Thanks for all the help. I am going with the ball style weedless to start with and will add more styles as cash flow increases.
