I have for years, I guess, put line on the hard way, with a pencil and some help from my son.  I have seen it and did not pay much attention to it but I picked up a Berkley line spooling station.  Man what a great simple tool that puts line on in a snap and the battery operated line puller is awesome.   I found it on clearance and for the $15 I paid, it made my life easier.

 

I have only tried this on a couple of baitcasters.  I'll see what it does on a spinning reel when I need it.

I have one also. They work great. Much better than the pencil method!

I should pick one up. Holding a pencil in between your toes and a rod in your hands is difficult at times.

I got one of those when they came out, it is well over 10 years now but it is worth every cent and if it broke I'd buy a new one in a flash even at full retail. The line stripper is nice but for filling a baitcasting reel or spinning reel it is awesome, no more finger burns or loose line. After I finish doing a reel it looks like it was put on by a machine, nice and even and tight, it is a very good tool and works very well.

These are such handy devices I just figured every serious fisherman had one.  I have two, because it is easier than you think to lose the clamps that fit on the spool rod.  Once I got a second model, then  the clamps magically appeared on the floor of my fishing shed.  Now I have a spool rod set for filler spools and a spool rod set for service spools.

I find the line stripper doesn't have enough power to strip from a b/c. A spinner no problem. For a b/c I use a tip i learned from a past Bass master article. I save the cardboard rolls of toilet paper or paper towels and slide it over my drill. Place the drill on rewind setting and the line comes off in less than a minute. Don't go to fast at first or you will over run the spool.

Why not just engage the thumb bar and run the line stripper? That's what I do and it pulls off the line on a Shimano 300 DSV in just a few seconds.

When i have used that little line stripper, its been on braid usually. For some reason with me when I feed the braid through the insert, the stripper doesn't catch it like it does with mono or copoly lines.

The line stripper works great, it isn't powerful though and you have to back off the spool tension a bit and press the thumb bar down. I've stripped of 30lb braid and 50lb braid off 2 different reels and it did a great job, several seconds but if you keep the spool tension tight or you try stripping off the loosened drag, well then that is another story.

Both you and Mark have very valid points. I do have the thumbar depressed, my suspicion lies with the internal orange rollers on the stripper itself, I don't think its catching the line properly. I appreciate the feedback however. Since switching to braid the line stripper doesn't get used that often anyways.

Bought one about a year ago after trying a couple of DYI ones. Works great like others have said I'd buy another I'd I broke this one. I think mine is branded by BPS.

Every once in a while tips are given where you have to say yourself " why couldn't I think of that" duh!! LOL..... That's how I felt when I came across this tip. 

I think taking line off is more of a problem then putting it on. I have used a drill tons to take line off. If you wanted to keep it suffix spools work great cause they are wide. I have some with braid I for whatever reason put on a reel and never used. As for putting it on and the pencil thing I think we all did that and it blows but your looking to solve that problem in the wrong way. Your better off putting it inside something then trying to run a pencil through it. It can help to keep it in the box also. It might sound weird but i have used my shoe I don't even know how many times to spool a reel. You can also stick it in between a couple bait boxes if it in the box and it will just spin inside the box. Necessity is the mother of invention or so they say.
