Bullseye Snakehead (South Fla)

I'm sure this has been posted before, but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for via the search option. What do you guys do when you catch one of these things? Are we supposed to kill them? According to this article http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2012-05-01/news/fl-frankenfish-broward-canals-20120427_1_snakeheads-frankenfish-fish-lab you get a $500 fine just for possessing them. I caught my first one today directly behind my apartment. I did however kill him. For some reason I feel bad about it.

Supposed to be great eating. Even if you don't want to eat it I'm sure someone else will

Very similar to Walleye!! Like Blue said even if you don't want it someone else will take it and that's better than tossing it in the trash!

throw them back

They do say they taste great, I wouldn't eat anything out of these Florida canals.  Snakeheads are fun to catch but I don't fish for them anymore, prefer peacocks for my freshwater fishing.

It's my understanding with snakeheads and other invasives, it's illegal to release them once caught.

In MD and VA,  where we have northerns, it is illegal to possess them alive.  Release or kill to take home to eat.  Great eating.

I can understand you feeling bad about killing a fish that your not going to eat. I have not killed a snake head in several years. I have taken a lot of grief over releasing the snake head but I have a moral objection to killing for killing sake. I would not be afraid to immediately release the fish back in the same body of water that it is caught in.

If you're quick enough about throwing them back into the body of water you caught them in, nobody's going to slap you with a possession charge
