Fall Salmon Run

Featured Replies

I'm looking to make the trip up to the Buffalo/Rochester New York area here soon for the fall salmon run. I know the steelhead are starting to run at Erie, but I haven't heard anything on the Salmon yet. Does anyone from the area want to give me a heads up on what they're doing?

Why not go to Pulaski?  It's full on up there, right now.

Pulaski adds another 2.5 hours of driving onto an already 4 hour drive :(

I'll probably know a little more tonight, if I decide to hit the big lake.  Not much going on as far as the ditches go for salmon, though.  Not enough rain, and low flows.  I imagine the Genny has bunch, though.  Sandy should have some as well.

My friend, Mikey Five-Bass, went up there with Joe Sancho (Elite Pro) and a few other buddies and slayed them this past weekend. My FB feed is littered with fat guys holding up Mud Sharks, lol.

Creeks are dry, and water is back down a foot or more from it's high point in spring.  Poop-tons of fish in 10-30 FOW, jumping all over the place. Had one strike in the 90 minutes I was out there - very unusual, but it's still pretty warm - no fish, but did get a nice pic of the sunset.

Great picture. Is that Lake Ontario?

We got a good bit of rain here in Pittsburgh today. Any rain up your way?

A little bit.  Nothing of any consequence, though.  Yeah, that's in front of Mill Creek in Webster.

I think the warmth has put a damper on things. I was looking for kings on the west side of Lake Michigan this past weekend. They were jumping but all I could drum up is some pike. Water temps here are still in the low 60's.

They run up here, so long as there's water flowing, but that also means cooler water. Things are running late here, though. That's for sure.

Fish have been in and around the SE Wisconsin harbors for a few weeks. There was a huge weekend tourney for both boat and shore salmon fishermen. I didn't see anyone catch a fish and from the guys we talked to, a few picked up some browns on skein but no kings. The charters were slow as well. We talked to one captain who went 3 for 3 on steelhead and not another bite.

Salmon fishing is great right now!  Using skien or egg sacks under a balsa or plastic float is a great way to catch them!  Best time to go is a few days after rain for stream fishing.  Going early in the morning is also a good idea especially to claim a spot on the hole.  I fish on the ontario side of Lake Ontario but i assume the Rodchester side shares the same patterns.  Steelhead and brown trout is also picking up!

Saw a picture on Instagram yesterday of some guys in Ellicott Creek in Buffalo catching some.

I booked my hotel. I'll be going up next Wednesday through Saturday.

Yes, I got my kitchen painted, and started on the living room, lol.

My friends went back up to Pulaski with their wives, and my FB feed was littered with pics of big mud sharks, so....  I'd say it's on.  All the fish were kyped up, and brown, so not my favorite to eat, but they're fun to tangle with.  Still waiting for the browns.  It's gonna be in the 80s tomorrow.  Hopefully that will bring some serious rain, and my ditches will fill up.

Saw several pics of big salmon from Sandy Creek in Hamlin getting posted on FB.  Water's low, but it's raining right now....

It'll be good to get the fish moving, I just hope the river doesn't blow up for my first trip in Nov. I'm building a 9' 4pc baitcast rod for a guy to do triple duty for inshore, salmon and of course chrome.

I have 24g floats for those days, like fishing with a bowling pin strapped onto your rig, lol.

Took a limit out today. Took a while to find a steam that they were running in, but once we found them, it was a ton of fun.
