Smaller Crankbaits Need Bigger Hooks Than Bigger Crankbaits?

Featured Replies

I was on *** and was ordering some bomber square A's, I normally get the 2" 3/8oz size but I decided I would buy a couple of the craw color ones in the 1/4oz which are a little shorter.

I replace the hooks on these but couldn't remember what size were on the smaller bomber, I looked on their website and it says the 1/4oz has number #3 hooks and the 3/8oz has #6 hooks, does this seem right? I went ahead and ordered #4 and #6 size hooks just to be safe...

Another question is what strength "X" do you normally buy for your crankbaits? I bought some "4X" strong ones because I assume they will be be stronger and thicker than normal hooks, I want this because I fish braid. Do y'all think 4x is overkill for cranks even when using braid?

4X - is a very stout hook and not routinely used on bass crank baits.

It's usually reserved for use when targeting larger fresh & salt water game fish.

The Mustad KVD Elite treble is 1x strong and 2x short shank making it a perfect aftermarket replacement treble for most any hard bait.

I think size #4 in this hook will do the job well.

Oh well I spent 6$ on two packs of these haha. A-Jay you think they wouldn't work, Or would they just not be ideal?

I have never fished a 4x treble on any crankbait, never needed to.

Putting that hook on a 1/4 ounce bait - probably will subdue the baits action a bit and may even sink it.

Additionally, to actually set those hooks you may need to pump up your line to something in the Barracuda class . . . . . . :eyebrows:

Just try the KVD trebles - you'll be glad you did.

Okay thanks for the help A-Jay, I'll try the trebles you suggested

More than likely a 4X treble will ruin the action on a crankbait. The reason is because the weight, the extra strength adds extra weight and with too much weight it will affect the action. The hook size is reversed, when the updated the bomber website they reversed the Square A hook sizes, the larger model gets the size #3.

The spark points aren't super huge for a 4X hook. I use them on my Bull Shads and spooks and they work just fine without hampering any action.

Yeah I just got them in the mail yesterday and they aren't as big as I thought they would be, they won't work for my crankbaits but I'm sure I can find some use for them
