Want To Work In The Fishing Industry?

Featured Replies

I've always wondered if I could somehow work in the "fishing industry."  I don't mean as a salesman, a pro, a TV personality, or some other high profile, public position.  I'm a business intelligence analyst by day, basically I collect and measure data, present trends, and forecast.  Sort of a business weatherman, though most of what I do lately are snapshots of the business, and historical reporting.

I've always wondered if there's a place for this.  Certainly, the larger companies employ this type of position, but I never hear about it.  I know one friend, a web developer, is involved with that side of the business.

Anyone ever hear about this stuff?  Or know someone that does something like this?  How about what you do?  Would it translate?  Would you do it?

Yea but you would have to move south ;)

That would not be a tragedy, lol.

Though I don't *need* to be anywhere specific to do what I do.  My last job, most of the operations were in Texas, Europe, and Brazil.

Considering I'm a student by day, that doesn't make much sense. But I'm largely interested in becoming a lawyer, but I don't see it translating well to the fishing industry. I mean, businesses need lawyers, and so do bass clubs, but I'm not sure there is a huge market for it. Interesting question.

Two things every business needs, irrespective of size or revenue: Lawyer and an Accountant.

And ya get 10% off ;)

I would think there is jobs available for your skill set.  Especially at corporate headquarters of someone like Strike King or BPS.

You may find that fishing is not as enjoyable when you do it for fun and as a living.

Read the original post, I wouldn't be fishing for a living.

I am a lawyer, and I got the fishing bug a few years before graduating from law school. I always wondered about working for the fishing/hunting industry or someone like the NRA. I thought that this would be quite the little niche, as many of my friends from law school were not interested in chasing a little green fish around. However, many companies (sadly) don't really care if the employee is personally invested in their "mission", so long as they perform their duties satisfactorily. Jakob if you have any questions about law school/lawyers send me a PM, I'd be happy to help in any way I could.

Just my observations on life too much of anything gets old.

Not if he worked for Rapala

JFrancho, I bet you could do a good business working independently as a consultant for multiple companies. I'm assuming only the largest fishing companies are big enough to have somebody with your experience on the payroll full time.

I haven't seen those types of positions available but i am sure they exist.  I did a lot of the same type of work you are doing for a major bank and was looking to do it for sports franchises.  It is hard to get the foot in the door though.....still trying though lol

Mustad USA HQ are about an hour from me.  My long time friend and fly tackle company owner fishes with one of the "and Sons" of Mustad and Sons.  He pronounces it "muss-TODD."

You need to start working on your angle then. I'll probably start pronouncing it that way now.

But the real question is, are they an hour to the south?
