I know some guys like swimbaits, others, lures such as spinnerbaits... What have you had the most success on? I was thinking about getting a perch colored spro bbz in slow sink, but wanted to get some more info as to what others use. Thanks!

Spoons are a classic and catch a ton of pike.

 

But my #1 pike producer seems to be just about anything I throw for Bass that I neglect to tie on with Wire . . . .

 

This of course is followed by under the breath cursing . . . .

Caught 2 last year about 36" flippin docks at Deep Creek Lake, MD on a 1/2oz jig. Personal best was 42' caught on a LC Slender pointer 97mr that never ran right again.

I like big Dardevles in Five of Diamonds.

BIG jerkbaits and glidebaits. X raps, subwalks, Jakes and glidin' raps are some of my favourites.

I've done quite a bit of open water pike fishing over the years. And to respond to you question, it depends on what size pike you are targeting. When pike are generally <12 lbs., they are still a relatively warm water species, very susceptible to most bass type lures and presentations. I've even caught pike up to 8 lbs. on 2" crappie jigs.

 

However, the larger and older they get, pike change and become a cool to cold water fish instead. They move deeper and feed on larger open water prey, such as trout. To entice these fish, I'd recommend larger, musky-sized inline spinners, such as the Wendel's Musky Harassers and big plugs like the 8" Swim Wizz or Believers. You need to troll these large baits slowly and deep. You can tie into some real giants this way. My biggest to date is a 43", 22 lb. bruiser taken in summer time, a couple of decades ago.
