Why would 40 IPT be over kill? Sure you won't need it for cranking but for techniques likes weightless senkos and Trig I would love it. Cast a senko, let it drop for a few seconds, jig it a bit, burn it back to me and repeat. I can search for fish a lot quicker this way. Plus when fishing for smallies they tend to make runs at you and this will definitely help out. Is it life and death not having it? Of course not but back then some people thought 6:1 was fast and when 7:1 came out the same skeptics said the same thing.

 

If these high gear reels don't lose too much torque then I'm all for it. Heck using my Metanium XG at 36 IPT I'm loving it. Longer handle and gear design, I don't feel like I'm losing any torque at all. That reel has some serious power for what it's offering.

There's a point where you begin to overwork your lure. Also, even with things like t rig that the action isn't effected by the speed, you will be a less thorough fisherman. Many of us need help slowing ourselves down.

Speak for yourself.  I would say you would be a more thorough and efficient fisherman because you could effectively cover more water with more casts in less time.

You cover more water because you're fishing faster. In some situations that's all well and good but truth be told... Most people need to slow down and work a spot more thoroughly not faster. I think some if you might benefit from a reel with an ipt of 12-18" It has its place for certain things like I mentioned earlier but I think for most it'll be too much.

I have a 4.9 and a 4.7. Tons of tourque. I love them for cranking or as big fish reels.

That's the users fault lol not the reel. I think faster reels like this are interesting, of course it's not something you will use to present every type of lure with. The option to reel faster can give you options of different presentation methods. Maybe something the fish haven't seen before.

Who works a senko and Trig with the reel? You work it with your rod. The benefits of a fast IPT is getting the lure back to you to cast again.

This reel would be perfect for all the punching and pitching I do. Makes a big difference. I would, without a doubt, lose more fish with a 5 to 1 fishing those techniques.

I know age is relative but you don't have to be an "old timer" to remember 4.x:1 ratios. I still have original Bantams and a 3.8 Curado.

I was talking less about remembering them than about the fact that bassers back in "the early days" didn't know anything higher than a 6:4:1.

I've been trying to get my hands on one of those 3.8 Curado's. They're perfect for slow working spinners for walleye.

I'm really enjoying this conversation. Shows that there is a need for the whole spectrum of speeds from slow to hyper speed.
