Problem With Okuma Helios

Featured Replies

Hey y'all,

I have an Okuma Helios that needs some maintenance. Where to start....

Problem: It doesn't reel smoothly, lots of friction, it doesn't click or anything.

Tried: I gave it a quick cleaning and grease/lube job, didn't really help anything.

What else can I do?

I might do just that if I can't figure it out. But I'm eager to learn something new this next few days I have off from work.

It's easy to overfill this reel.  Carefully check to see if the line is rubbing up against the thumbar.  Usually pulling off about 20yds of line will do the trick.

Check this first!

Alright. So I've given it a fairly thorough cleaning and oiling, and peeled off a fair bit of line.
The reeling is fine now, but there is still drag when I cast, especially at the end. I've turned downed the centrifugal brakes almost all the way (The birds nests help me peel off line haha). And the friction brake isn't high or anything.
