Reel For Flipping Stick. What Gear Ratio?

Featured Replies

I have a flipping stick that I need a reel for. Not sure what to get. Im leaning toward a Lews.  Biggest question, is what gear ratio? I know a lot of people talk about a high speed reel to get the bait in faster, but Ive also heard that the slower gear ratio is better cause it has the power you need to get the fish in.  What do you prefer?

I would look at IPT opposed to gear ratio. I fish a *** with a 8:1 which is about 30" per turn.  Now my frog rod is a Smoke 200 7.3:1 which has an 34" IPT.  Flipping/pitching,my opinion you want to be able to move that fish quickly away from cover and bring your bait in quickly.  But either of the two reels would work for flipping.  I just prefer a smaller reel flipping since I don't need to cast as far as I do with the frog.

Go with a high speed reel, brand/model is a personal choice. The high speed provides plenty of power to move the fish away from cover. That is not an issue.

check out the lews Super Duty in the 7:1 or 8:1... its a beast...

Yup - IPT is the deal.  Most anglers end up preferring something that gets at least in the 32 inch.

The "power" needed & used to move a fish routinely comes from the rod.  The reel is used to help keep the line tight.

Some anglers develop a winch it in style that works as well.  In this case the reel does considerably more work.

I had read an article from Shaw Grigsby that said he liked the Revo Winch reel, but I had seen quite a few people on here talk about higher speed reels for the flipping and pitching, which made me think... Thanks yall.

I've got a super duty 8:1, and has 35" per turn. I love it and only use that reel for my pitching/flipping, more than enough power. It just flat out performs

As fast as you can get with most IPT that's about all you need and make sure it has atleast a decent drag.

As they've said, it's IPT. I have a Lew's SuperDuty in 8.0:1, love it.

You do realize Grigsby is sponsored by Quantum.  I believe he fishes EXO's and the newer MGTour.  I don't think I've seen him fish any Abu Garcia reels unless he changed sponsors this season.

It was Hank Parker, not Shaw Grigsby.  I get those jokers mixed up sometimes. Think its the stash.

Funny thing is, Hank Parker on his new season of his show, will now be using Lew's.

Funny thing is, Lews it the same thing as a Revo internally.  So get the Lews that compares to the winch and what Hank said will still be true.

True.. So that would be a Tournament Pro or similar model.
