Hey You Canadian Fishers!

Recommended Posts

I have been looking to get a new rod or 2 for the season. The only sites I really know are Bass Pro shop which doesn't have very good selection, Cabelas which seems to have little selection and high prices and Tackle  Warehouse which is good on prices and good selection but I think they have high shipping costs/ brokerage fees. Where do all you fellow Canadian fishers usually purchase your new gear and if it's from the states how is the shipping fees and brokerage charges?

Where in Ontario do you live?  PM me if you wish to keep that a secret.

Again, not sure where you live, but Gagnon Sports in the Oshawa area and SAIL have some great selections.

No Canadian sites that I have found show all the items they have in store on their websites.  If possible, try to visit the stores in person to see the full selection.

A couple good stores in the GTA that I like are Sail, Fishing World (Hamilton), and Pro J's (Scarborough).

Shipping rods to Canada from the US can be a bit of a pain.  Generally fishing rods are above the length limit of what Canada Post will accept, which leaves you with UPS and Fed Ex.  Out of the two I prefer Fed Ex as they will include brokerage in certain shipping services.  UPS will include brokerage but only for 5 items (it is slightly more complicated than that but if you are less than 5 you are safe).  Both will generally charge you sales tax on whatever you purchase so just count on adding that into the prices.  UPS also charges you a percentage on whatever tax they pay upfront unless you call them and pre authorize an tax charges before it clears Canadian customs.

All that said, I don't think ordering from TW would end up costing you more than the provincial sales tax.  If you are ordering a couple of rods I think it would be worth it.

Maybe if you find some stuff that you want through TW or another US retailer people here could direct you to a Canadian retailer who stocks those items.

Fishing World is top notch.

I am actually surprised that no one is mentioning Le Baron. I am on the east coast and do mail order from them through their Montreal (Main) store but they also have retail stores in Markham, Mississauga and Ottawa.

I have yet to find any stores in Canada with better pricing whether it be retail store or online. Has anyone had a different experience with them and found better?

Mumbly I find most of my better prices from local shops not the big box stores.  I do check Le Baron at times, but I'm usually not impressed with their deals.  Maybe I'm missing something.  Fishing World and my other local shop will price match too.

IMO, rods are expensive unless you can find what your looking for used. The selections are pretty thin as well. Le Baron usually has the best price around and I will wait until they have a "no tax" sale as the prices are still high.

Reels and all other stuff, I try to find deals online and stock up on them.

We have a few local shops here and to tell the truth I would like to support them but price and selection is just poor in comparison sadly. I imagine there are a lot more shops in Ontario. I'll mail order 95% of my tackle, whether it is from within Canada or brought in from the US, but rods are another matter. The shipping on rods can be as much as the cost of the rod (depending on the length). Rods I will buy local.

I have been noticing amazon.ca is starting to list more and more rods, reels and tackle on their site. With free shipping for orders over $25, that might be a good thing as long as they are priced right.

Not sure if you had already but i'd check with local shops about "special" ordering a rod in.... My local shops selection is not the greatest but they will order in a wide variety of items.

We get screwed in Canada for shipping / brokerage....

My choice if not local or travelling to the states would be TW during a major sale to eat up some of the brokerage fees.

Where are you from? if near me I can recommend a shop; pm me if you want.

I am located in the Hamilton area so Fishing World is right in my backyard, I am just away for the next few months so I won't be able to check it out until Late May/early June. Living in Ottawa at the moment so I'm looking for places in this area as well.
