Dobyns Vs Pinnacle

Recommended Posts

Looking for a new MH  rod.  looking at using it for frogs and maybe jigs.  I currently use a pinnacle perfecta 7'3" MH rod for frogs and maybe using that one for spinnerbaits.

I will be replacing a gandermountain CSX titanium.

I am looking at the dobyns 735c or 736 or the Pinnacle dhc5-701cah

Mainly looking at the quality difference between the brands from those who use or have used these brands.  I see alot more people here using dobyns over pinnacle.

Pinnacle is the "New Guy" on the block. I think we have some staff rviews on the specific rod you are considering.

I love my Dobyns rods, and I would definitely take one of those over a Pinnacle. A rod for froging and a rod for jigging could be two different rods for me. For jigs, I want a rod that is sensitive and strong. For frogs, I just want a rod that is strong, because with frog fishing, you're going to see the fish bite.

If you really want to try out a Pinnacle, I'd suggest going to a store that offers both rods and compare the two and see which you prefer.

dobyns 735c is the way to go. It can work frogs and jigs. Some people want a more powerful rod for jigs so keep that in mind.

I've not used the any of Pinnacle's current offerings.  In the last few years it seems they have changed things up a bit so I don't have any insight on them, I'm sorry.

With the Dobyns models, I would personally recommend the 735c.  It has plenty of power to fish a frog in most situations, you may run into heavy cover and an angry 5 lber that may push the limits but other than that you will be safe.  735 will make a good all around jig rod as well.  The 736 you mentioned is a great frog rod, some do like it for pitching but it is a brute of a rod.  I doubt too many would enjoy a jig too much with the rod, unless you were planning to hook mainly fish over 5 lbs in really heavy cover, I would lean towards the 735.

I own both brands, in several models. DHC5 compares favorably to Champion. DHC7 compares to Champion Extreme, if not a little lighter. Actions on Dobyns are slightly faster. Powers are comparable, though the rating systems differ. Pinnacle MH sits between Dobyns 4 and 5, maybe closer to the 4. There's things I like and dislike about both. Pinnacles can be had with micros, but they're all split grips. You can get a full rear with a DX. Dobyns have flashy paint, Pinnacle is bare, and low key. I like the thread hood on the Dobyns better. ACS seat on Pinnacle, ECS on Dobyns.

Lots of room for personal preferences, performance is about the same. The DHC5 probably represents the greatest value for the buck.

I have both the 735c and the 736c.

I bought the 736c first, and in my opinion, it is right for the backbone, but not enough tip to make good casts and control the frog well.  I use this stick primarily for pitching/punching 1/2oz plus baits.

That is why I bought the 735c.  That is the prefect frog rod IMO.  Awesome tip section and a great backbone.  I do not think you can go wrong with a 735c as a jig rod either.  It is one of the most versatile sticks in thier lineup.

Thank you all. I ended up finding a 735c full handle for 170 used but it still has the plastic on the cork so it looks new. I was leaning towards the dobyns and finding that deal sealed it for me. I like the pinnacle but want to try as many brands as I can.
