Aaron Martens talks about putting braid on his reels as a backer. He said it gives him an extra 10 feet on a cast. Do any of yall do this?  Also, how much should you put on there?

Im pretty sure Aaron Martens puts a bit of braid on all his baitcasters. He said it makes it lighter and makes the spool spin faster. Just unsure about how much he puts on there

I never use braid as a backer but it does make sense.  I would also venture a guess that unless you have all brakes turned completely off that the difference of that lighter spool is irrelevant.

well when guys are at the level he is at, the minute details of gear make a difference or it could also just be in his head too but that is almost important as anything.

Any spool can handle braid. If it's a wiffle spool you can tie through the holes. I dont do this but plenty people do. If it doesn't have holes then you can make 1.5-2 wraps with electrical tape and then spool up. The tape gives the braid something to bite into. This is my prefered method no matter the spool design. If you buy power pro braid they give you these adhesive foam strips in the box. That's what they are for.

He's one of those people that are a perfectionist. As for the amount it depends on the size of braid. #50 has a diameter equal to #12 mono. So if your spool holds 120 yards of #12 then you could do a 60/60 split. Smaller braids have a smaller diameter and would require more line to fill the same amount as a larger braid. So then you get into does more yards of smaller braid weigh more than less yards of larger braid. For the average fisherman it's really not worth it imo.

That is the way I'm leaning. I had considered trying it, but it seems like more of a hassle than just going with the straight line.

10' on a cast won't likely result in any extra fish but if you want to experiment you'd fill the spool except for 1.5 long casts worth then add your top shot.

Of course after you get a backlash from having everything wide open the distance gained will be gone anyways lol

he said this in one of his videos. He changes a lot because its free and money is on the line.

Doing this wil also save mucho dinero on your mono or FC.  You will only use half as much. Another advantage, if you put a piece of tape on the spool where the mono starts, when you backlash it will only go that deep.  It is a good idea!

 If just for backing, use the cheap dacron like we use on fly reels as backing.
